Holiday apartment in Gañuelas: Sierra, sea views and tradition

Gañuelas combines its elevated location on the Sierra de la Almenara with views of the sea, a vibrant festival tradition and traces of various historical periods. The village is located on the Sierra de la Almenara, which is designated as a Site of Community Importance (SCI). At the same time, Gañuelas lies under the protection of this sierra, helping to prevent severe winter frosts. In the surrounding area, the sierra provides a habitat for spur-thighed tortoises as well as golden eagles, eagle owls and peregrine falcons.

Nature and landscape

The landscape around Gañuelas is particularly varied along the El Paretón–Gañuelas–La Majada route. It passes through agricultural terraces, Mediterranean scrubland and landscapes with wide views of the nearby sierras. This route is scheduled to take 5 hours and 30 minutes. In addition, the protected natural area near Gañuelas invites visitors to go hiking and follow cycling routes. Thus, among the verified features of the village, both the landscape scenery and designated outdoor activities are represented.

Culture and history

A notable historical site north of Gañuelas is La Ciñuela. The high-altitude settlement of the Argaric culture is dated to the period from 2200 to 1500 BC. La Ciñuela also contains traces of later Roman settlement from the 5th and 6th centuries AD. The settlement has not been prepared for visitors: there are no approved paths, wooden walkways or information boards explaining the visible remains.

The archaeological surroundings also include the Cueva de Morote site. It is catalogued in Mazarrón as an Asset of Cultural Interest and is located in the area of the Diputación de Gañuelas, 1.3 kilometres southwest of Gañuelas. Gañuelas itself is also home to the Ermita de San Bartolomé de Gañuelas, a named religious chapel. The cultural profile is complemented by the ADEMUR GAMA association from Gañuelas-Mazarrón. Its workshops focus on making jewellery and accessories, ceramic objects and even paintings.

Festivals and regional cuisine

The patron-saint festivities of Gañuelas, held in honour of Saint Bartholomew, take place on 24 August and are maintained every year as a vibrant tradition. The celebrations include the traditional Fiesta Blanca. Tastings of paella, migas and hot chocolate are also usually on the programme. The presentation of the 2025 Fiestas de San Bartolomé took place at the viewpoint by the church of Gañuelas.

Even outside the festival programme, traditional dishes form part of the village’s culinary character. Ajotomate, arroz con conejo and migas ruleras are mentioned. This brings regional dishes, craft activities, religious traditions and archaeological evidence together within a compact thematic setting.
