Holiday apartment in El Moral: mountains, history and regional cuisine

El Moral lies south of Cerro del Moral, whose highest point reaches 1,369 metres. Set amid mountainous landscapes, a long local history and regional traditions, it is a destination with many different facets.

Nature

Pine forest is the predominant vegetation in the mountainous areas. These include the Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis), the black pine and the maritime, or coastal, pine (Pinus pinaster). The climb to Cerro de la Fuente is easy and has only a gentle incline. A cross stands at the summit, from where there are far-reaching views across the Campo de Caravaca and the surrounding mountains. El Moral’s proximity to the Revolcadores area is also particularly appealing to nature lovers and hikers.

History

The town’s history stretches far back. El Moral was first mentioned as the hamlet of Venta del Moral; the relevant documents date from 1571 and 1577. In the 18th century, the name Venta del Moral gave way to the present-day name El Moral. In the archaeological study area of El Moral and Pulpite, settlement or use has been documented from the Late Prehistory through the Iberian, Roman and Late Roman periods to the Middle Ages. Roman remains have also been identified at Cerro de El Moral.

Culture

A striking testament to the local architectural and religious culture is the Ermita de El Moral. It is now located outside the built-up area beside the former regional road. The single-nave building has a rectangular floor plan and is covered by a barrel vault. Its furnishings include a simple plaster altarpiece and three niches in the presbytery; the main niche contains the Virgen de la Asunción.

The patron saint festivities are also part of El Moral’s cultural life. The municipality’s summer programme for 2026 scheduled patron saint festivities in honour of the Virgen de la Asunción in El Moral from 7 to 9 August. El Moral’s patron saint celebrations include night-time dances, communal meals and a traditional procession.

The traditional appearance of the town also includes the public washhouse. It was still open on 25 May 2019 and was used by some local residents; its sound is included in Fundación Integra’s sound map.

Cuisine

Local tradition is also reflected in the cuisine. Migas and rice are among the traditional dishes in El Moral. In El Moral, olla de verano is traditionally prepared with pork and vegetables. At the Caserío La Vidriera in El Moral, the “Conéctate entre ovejas” experience includes an interactive workshop on making artisanal fresh cheese. During the workshop, visitors knead, shape and taste their own cheese.
