Holiday apartment in Purias: Towers, castles and history

Purias shows how differently history can be read in one place. The local references range from individual buildings to the landscape, routes and local events.

Culture and history

The Portajo area in Purias contains military remains from the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). These include two reinforced-concrete bunkers with machine-gun nests, trench sections, connecting branches, ammunition depots and improvised shelters for troops. The individual elements point to different functions within the military complex of that time.

Another historical landmark is the Torre de Purias, a small square tower near the Camino Real de Vera. This was a historic coastal road. The Torre de Purias served to control the Camino Real de Vera and was part of a larger defensive complex that monitored the access routes to Lorca and its castle. The tower is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural and protected under Spanish heritage legislation.

The Castillo de Felí is also one of the area's historical landmarks. Some authors date the construction of the castle to the final years of the 12th century or the first years of the 13th century, during the Islamic period. The use of various water-collection and water-distribution systems also dates from the Muslim period: in Purias, norias, channels and underground qanat galleries with ventilation and cleaning shafts were used for this purpose.

Landscape and routes

The landscape around Purias includes foothills of the Sierra de Carrasquilla. Another way to access the historic sites can be found as part of the Fiestas de Santa Ana: in Purias, a walking route leads from the Ermita de Felí via the former Ermita de Felí to the Castillo de Felí. The ascent to the castle is optional.

The Castillo de Felí can be reached from the direction of Lorca towards Águilas. At Purias, turn left onto a local road that leads via Morata to Aguaderas and Mazarrón. The route described is therefore closely connected with the places and road names mentioned, without requiring any additional distance information.

A weekly market takes place in Purias on Sundays. The Purias market is one of the markets in Lorca's pedanías with more than 50 stalls. The Cuadrilla de Purias also takes part in the traditional Encuentro de Cuadrillas de Pascua in Lorca. At this gathering, the groups sing and dance during the Christmas season.
