Holiday apartment in Llano de Brujas: culture, festivals and Huerta traditions

Llano de Brujas combines ecclesiastical culture, vibrant festival traditions and the historic traces of the Huerta de Murcia with a townscape in which waterways, paths and different forms of architecture stand side by side. One of the most important sights is the parish church Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de las Lágrimas. The parish of Llano de Brujas was founded in 1877.

Culture and history

Smaller sacred sites are also part of the cultural fabric of Llano de Brujas. A former chapel was known by the name of Baena. In Cabecicos, there is also a chapel where San Félix, the patron saint of the silkworm, is venerated. Llano de Brujas is also the birthplace of Francisco Sánchez Bautista. Here, therefore, you will encounter not only larger ecclesiastical buildings, but also named chapels and the town’s connection to a figure from its cultural history.

Festivals and community life

The annual program is shaped particularly by religious and community-led festivals. The Fiestas Patronales de Llano de Brujas take place every June in honor of the patron saint San Pedro Apóstol. These patron saint festivities include the Gran Desfile de Carrozas. Also in June, festivals in honor of San Félix take place in Cabecicos. Thus, two different forms of saint veneration take center stage in the same month: San Pedro Apóstol in Llano de Brujas and San Félix in Cabecicos.

Another seasonal tradition is the winter carnival celebrations. On Domingo de Piñata, numerous comparsas parade through the streets of Llano de Brujas. The community events calendar is complemented by a Marcha Ciclista organized by the Asociación de Vecinos de Llano de Brujas. The culture of the Huerta de Murcia also has its own setting: the Huertana associations La Carreta and El Limonar hold their respective cultural weeks. These celebrate the folklore, traditions, gastronomy and culture of the Huerta de Murcia.

Landscape

The present-day landscape of Llano de Brujas has a clearly recognizable historical depth. The town’s present-day areas remained Almarjales until the 17th century. These were wetlands flooded by river water. This former type of landscape is part of the history of the local area.

Townscape

A particularly illustrative area is the Rincón de San Antón on the left bank of the Río Segura. There stands a chapel built in the mid-19th century in honor of Saint San Antón. The Rincón de San Antón is surrounded by a network of irrigation channels and paths. This area features modern and contemporary houses as well as old adobe houses with barrel-shaped clay roof tiles. The riverbank, chapel, channels, paths and the various types of houses thus form a townscape in which older and newer architectural elements are visible together.
