Villanueva Del Río Segura can be discovered through its architecture, landscapes and traditional festivals. A striking example is the Casa de Doña Isabel Baltasara palace: built at the beginning of the 19th century, it is an imposing two-storey building.
Culture and History
The Casa de Doña Isabel Baltasara palace museum houses the largest collection of paintings in the Region of Murcia, which is significant because of its historical value. The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built in the 19th century according to a design by Juan de Villanueva. It is also a notable example of neoclassical architecture and is classified as a BIC (Bien de Interés Cultural, Property of Cultural Interest).
The parish church may contain one of the eight oil paintings created for the Monastery of Guadalupe, exhibited as “La Ascensión de la Virgen”; the work is dated to 1694–1698.
Geographical Setting
An urban route leads through the old town, with its monuments, the façades of stately homes and viewpoints overlooking the heart of the Ricote Valley. The Ruta del Agua del Valle de Ricote also passes through Villanueva del Río Segura. The two routes connect different spatial references: one explores the old town, while the other bears the name of the valley and reflects its relationship with water.
Nature and Views
The Mirador de San Roque offers panoramic views of Villanueva del Río Segura, the Segura River, the huertas and the surrounding mountains. The cultural landscape of Villanueva del Río Segura includes fruit and citrus groves, especially lemon trees. A sculpture of El Corazón de Jesús stands on a mountain, offering views across the valley.
Festivals and Activities
The traditional Romería de San Roque takes place every year on 13 August at the Ermita de San Roque. The patron saint festivals, Fiestas Patronales de San Roque y Virgen de la Asunción, are celebrated from 13 to 17 August. El Golgo is also one of the mentioned places to visit: the former power station is used for fishing and, in summer, for swimming.
