Mazarrón: Mediterranean Coast, Cultural Heritage and Holiday Apartments

Mazarrón lies on a wide bay open to the Mediterranean and has 35 km of coastline. White sandstone formations, beaches, unspoilt coves and historical sites create a varied picture of the town: the sea and landscape are just as central as Roman heritage, Phoenician history and water sports.

Coast and Sea

The beaches of La Reya, Bahía and El Castellar, as well as the unspoilt coves of Cala Amarilla, Playa de la Grúa, Parazuelos, Covaticas and Percheles, offer ideal conditions for swimming and long walks by the sea. Next to Bolnuevo Beach are the Erosiones de Bolnuevo, a landscape of white sandstone formations. Their distinctive shapes were created by wind and water erosion, giving this stretch of coast an unusual appearance.

Mazarrón's marina is also part of the town's maritime character. It has 200 berths. At the local sailing club, competitions are combined with courses for learning and improving sailing skills. Several diving clubs offer courses for all levels, as well as trips to rocky seabeds, underwater caves and underwater crevices.

Culture and History

The Castillo de los Vélez de Mazarrón is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural under the first transitional provision of Law 4/2007 of 16 March 2007 on the cultural heritage of the Autonomous Community of Murcia. The Castillo de los Vélez has an irregular layout, covers just over 3,000 m² and is divided into the actual fortress and the arms courtyard.

In Puerto De Mazarron, the Museo Arqueológico Factoría Romana de Salazones preserves parts of the structures of a large Roman industrial complex used to produce salted fish and fish sauces. The Factoría Romana de Salazones is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Guided group visits can be arranged by appointment in advance.

The Centro de Interpretación del Barco Fenicio is located on Avenida Tierno Galván in Puerto de Mazarrón, next to Playa de la Isla. The recently opened centre uses an audiovisual projection, graphic material, models and information panels to provide information about the oldest Phoenician ships found in the Mediterranean and the history of the Phoenicians associated with Mazarrón. It also displays a reproduction of the ship dated to the 7th century BC.

Nature

The Sierra de las Moreras Protected Landscape is a coastal mountain range on the Mediterranean. Golden eagles, eagle owls, peregrine falcons, kestrels and spur-thighed tortoises have been documented in the Sierra de las Moreras.
