Puerto de Mazarrón: Holiday apartment between the town beach and history

Puerto de Mazarrón combines a striking coastal landscape with traces of Phoenician seafaring and Roman fish processing. Puerto de Mazarrón is also home to historic sites and the Mercadillo Artesanal, which takes place monthly. The town beach and marina form a maritime focal point; the historic sites offer another area of interest, while the wider Mazarrón coast includes coves and diving areas with underwater caves.

Culture and history

At the Centro de Interpretación “Barco Fenicio de Mazarrón” in Puerto de Mazarrón, visitors can see an audiovisual projection, graphic material, models and information panels about the history of the Phoenicians in relation to Mazarrón. The exhibition also includes a reproduction of a ship. The Centro de Interpretación del Barco Fenicio focuses on two Phoenician boats found off Playa de La Isla, which are considered the oldest boats discovered in the Mediterranean.

One of these boats, Mazarrón II, lies beneath the sea off Playa de La Isla. It is covered by a metal structure for protection and is therefore currently not visible. The Roman past is also represented by the Factoría Romana de Salazones, which is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of Archaeological Zone. The Museo Arqueológico y Factoría Romana de Salazones preserves parts of a significant industrial complex from Roman times, which was used to produce salted fish and fish sauces.

During a cultural tour of the Factoría Romana de Salazones, it was explained how the Romans salted and preserved fish and which fish sauces they used, including garum. Another protected historic site is the Torre de Santa Isabel, a monument protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural within the urban area of Puerto de Mazarrón.

Coast and water sports

Playa del Puerto de Mazarrón is a town beach with a seafront promenade. There is a bus stop for the Mazarrón–Murcia route, and boats can be hired at the beach. The conditions at Cala del Faro are suitable for beginner diving courses.

Beyond the town beach, Mazarrón’s 35-kilometre coast shapes the maritime surroundings. It features numerous deserted coves and impressive diving areas with underwater caves. Thus, the municipal beach, protected historic sites and coastal diving areas exist alongside one another in different geographical contexts.

Harbour and local events

The marina of Puerto de Mazarrón is located next to the seafront promenade, opposite Mazarrón beach and 200 metres from it. The Mercadillo Artesanal offers a different time-related aspect: the craft market takes place on the third Saturday of every month. In June, July and August, the fourth Saturday is also added as a market date.
