Discover La Murta – Holiday Apartment, Waterways and Regional Park

La Murta reveals its character through the combination of water, local history and landscape. The Rambla de La Murta curves around the rocky promontory on which the inhabited centre is located. The Fuente de La Murta played an important role in its development: the spring provided a constant and abundant supply of water, and its presence contributed to the consolidation of a permanent settlement from which present-day La Murta emerged.

Culture

The village is home to an old chapel dedicated to Santa Cruz. On 2 May, La Murta holds a festival in honour of Santa Cruz. One of the festival's main activities is decorating the cross, followed by its blessing by the parish priest. Another named feature of the area is the Olivo de La Murta, which is protected by local regulations.

History

The historic water supply can be traced through the Sistema del Caño de La Murta. The water channel carried the collected water to a water mill and a storage basin in the inhabited centre of La Murta. The historic Sistema del Caño de La Murta used an underground dam to collect the groundwater circulating in the bed of the Rambla.

Along the Rambla de La Murta, the hydraulic remains include up to four structures of ethnographic, architectural and historical value. The individual traces are therefore connected with the water management system, which played such a central role in the development of the inhabited centre.

Experiences

The Observatorio de La Murta is located in the La Murta area. It has a five-metre dome and a 16-inch Meade Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. At the same time, the Observatorio de La Murta serves as a research centre and a place for scientific outreach.

A route documented by the municipality is called “Ruta por Los Monreales: La chimenea de La Murta”. It is 7 km long and has a medium level of difficulty. José Manuel Pintado García Garden is also located in the vicinity of La Murta; it is a named geographical feature registered as a garden.

Nature

The Sierra de Carrascoy and Monte El Valle form the Carrascoy and El Valle Regional Park. The regional park is designated as a Natura 2000 site as well as a Site of Community Importance and a ZEPA. The Olivo de La Murta stands on the foothills of the Sierra de Carrascoy and is approximately 5.3 metres tall.

Several named geographical features with different classifications are located in the vicinity of La Murta. Castillo De La Asomada is a named geographical feature in the form of a castle. Museo Cartago Colección is a named geographical feature in the form of a museum. Sierra del Puerto and Carrascoy are also located in the area, each being a named geographical feature in the form of a mountain.

In the wider regional surroundings of La Murta are the Museo Etnológico de la Huerta de Alcantarilla, a named geographical feature in the form of a museum, and Acueducto de La Ñora, a named geographical feature in the form of an ancient site. Terra Natura is also located in this wider regional area, as a named geographical feature in the form of a zoo.
