Corvera: Nature, Trails and Living Traditions

Corvera lies on the edge of the El Valle y Carrascoy Regional Park and occupies part of the southern slope of the Sierra de Carrascoy as well as part of the Campo de Cartagena. Semi-arid areas, water-bearing rambla watercourses, protected natural areas and a lively festival calendar shape the different sides of the town.

Nature

Corvera features semi-arid landscapes. The Rambla de Murta and the Rambla del Ciprés run through the area; both carry water from the Sierra de Carrascoy. Corvera's natural area features diverse tree and shrub vegetation as well as species-rich communities of birds, reptiles and mammals.

The Sierra de Carrascoy Regional Park is one of Corvera's most important sights. Corvera is also one of the settlements on the edge of the El Valle y Carrascoy Regional Park.

Hiking and Trails

A municipal geological route runs through the Rambla de Los Jurados in Corvera. It is six kilometres long and has a moderate difficulty level. The route provides information about the landscape, flora and historical use of the area.

The Camino del Azahar passes through Corvera and visits the Nuestra Señora del Rosario church. Stage ES44a-02a of the pilgrimage route leaves Corvera towards the RM-601 road and then turns onto the road to Brianes. After Casa de Escobedo, it crosses the Rambla del Escobedo. Overall, ES44a-02a runs from Corvera to Murcia and is 28.410 kilometres long.

Culture and History

The parish church of Corvera was founded in 1636 and dedicated to the Virgen del Rosario, Our Lady of the Rosary. It served the neighbouring areas as an ecclesiastical reference point for the administration of the sacraments. Corvera's historic country estates include Casa Torrica, whose buildings were remodelled during this period.

Another culturally interesting place is the Observatorio Astronómico de La Murta. The observatory has a five-metre dome and a 16-inch Meade Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. It is being restored so that it can be opened to the public in the future. The restoration project also includes public evenings for astronomical observation.

Festivals and Cuisine

In October, Corvera holds patron-saint festivities in honour of the Virgen del Rosario, Our Lady of the Rosary. The gastronomic programme includes paella and migas. The festivities also feature competitions in traditional and social games, fairground games for children, dancing and musical performances. Corvera also hosts the Corvera-Rock festival.

The Good Friday procession in Corvera dates back to 1995. During it, the Santísimo Cristo de la Fe, the Virgen de la Soledad and the Cristo Yacente are carried through the streets.

Finca Torrecillas Eco Retreat is a private 100-hectare site in Corvera within the protected Sierra Carrascoy-El Valle natural area. It offers gastronomic activities and a cultural route.
