Alhama de Murcia: Holiday apartment between Los Mayos and Sierra Espuña

With Los Mayos, Alhama de Murcia holds the title of Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional. Since its revival in 1982, the festival has been celebrated on the first Sunday in May. It usually features depictions of extinct professions typical of Alhama, everyday scenes and satirical scenes. The festival tradition is complemented by archaeological evidence, Baroque architecture and protected landscapes, giving the town a range of different facets.

Culture

The Museo Arqueológico Los Baños preserves and protects the archaeological remains of the baths of Alhama de Murcia. Another visible architectural landmark is the Torre del Homenaje of the Castillo de Alhama de Murcia, which is 23 metres high. Las Termas Romanas were built at the foot of the castle hill in the 1st century AD and used until the 4th century. Their restored rooms include a frigidarium, a tepidarium, a caldarium and a pool.

The Iglesia de San Lázaro Obispo also reflects the town’s architectural history. It was rebuilt in the Baroque style in the first half of the 18th century and classified as a BIC (Bien de Interés Cultural) in 2005. The cultural calendar is rounded out by two craft markets held annually: one during the Los Mayos festival and one at the Feria de Octubre. Natural products, handicrafts and antiques are sold there. The XVI Fiesta de la Matanza announced for 2026 was also scheduled to include tastings, demonstrations of traditional butchering and sausage-making.

Nature

The Sierra Espuña Regional Park lies within the municipal areas of Alhama de Murcia, Totana and Mula. The area has been protected since 1978, classified as a Regional Park since 1992 and is also protected as a ZEPA and LIC. Within the Regional Park there are signposted hiking trails and marked walking routes.

The Mirador de los Barrancos de Gebas offers a view of the abrupt geomorphological complex with its impressive ravines. The Paisaje Protegido Barrancos de Gebas is an area of more than 2,000 hectares between the three mountain ranges of Espuña, La Muela and El Cura. Erosion channels, small ravines and canyons shape the landscape, which has no tree-covered vegetation; it is popularly known as a “lunar landscape”.

Routes

From the Collado Mangueta car park, the PR-MU 63 Sendero del Pedro López trail leads to two restored Pozos de Cartagena. One of these Pozos de Cartagena can be visited from the inside. A bus stop in Alhama de Murcia is served by buses heading to Murcia, Lorca or Puerto de Mazarrón.
