El Berro’s landscape is particularly evident along a clearly described route: the official Sendero de El Berro is a 10.450 km circular hiking trail, for which around three hours are estimated without breaks. It begins and ends in El Berro next to the Sierra Espuña campsite. This establishes the trail’s length, approximate walking time, and two endpoints, as well as its connection to the surrounding area.

Nature

From the campsite, the Sendero de El Berro follows the signposted PR-MU 79 into the Sierra Espuña. The trail passes through dense pine forest, accompanied by aromatic rosemary, and leads to the historic Casa de Leiva. Nearby, it also passes the former tuberculosis sanatorium. The landscape of the Sierra Espuña is characterised by pine forest with distinctive Mediterranean undergrowth.

The protected status of this natural area is also part of its present-day character: Sierra Espuña Regional Park has been protected since 1978. In 1992, it was reclassified as a regional park. It is also protected as a ZEPA and LIC. Thus, the route through the Sierra Espuña brings together landscape features and clearly defined protection categories without the circular trail losing its direct connection to El Berro.

Trails

Beyond the local circular hiking trail, El Berro is connected to the GR-252 Camino del Bajo Guadalentín. This includes an approximately 29.50 km stage from Totana to El Berro, for which around 7–8 hours are estimated on foot. There is also a stage from El Berro to Casas Nuevas as part of the GR-252; it ends after 28.70 km. The two sections specify their starting and destination points as well as their respective distances, while the Totana stage additionally includes an approximate walking time.

Culture

An official guided tour of El Berro takes visitors through the village’s characteristic streets and corners. The patron saint festivals of El Berro, held in honour of the Virgen de los Dolores, provide a special cultural setting. During these festivals, a solemn procession in honour of the Virgen de los Dolores takes place, accompanied by the Banda Municipal de Música de Alhama de Murcia. The patron saint festivals also include a traditional Migas competition.
