Holiday apartment in El Palmar: church, festivals and historic sites

El Palmar combines religious tradition, festival culture and historic sites with green spaces and routes through the Huerta de Murcia. Between the parish church, archaeological traces, castles and public spaces, the town reveals different historical and cultural layers.

Culture and history

The Iglesia parroquial de la Purísima Concepción was granted parish church status in 1614. Its interior displays historic sculptures of San Roque, the Virgen del Rosario, San José and San Antonio. The Campana de Auroros Nuestra Señora del Rosario de El Palmar is also part of the town’s religious history: it was established in 1820 and legally founded on 19 April 1995.

Other historical points of reference can be found around the old transport routes and fortifications. The La Paloma archaeological site was probably the location of a small Roman settlement dating from the 2nd century BC. The remains of the Castillo del Portazgo Superior are listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The Castillo de la Asomada is an unfinished 12th-century castle and also a viewpoint over the Huerta and the surrounding area of Murcia; it stands at an altitude of more than 530 metres. The Via Augusta ran along the Rambla del Puerto. A mansio, or roadside inn, located there served travellers as a resting and provisioning station.

The Teatro Bernal also represents El Palmar’s more recent cultural history. From 1910 onwards, it became a meeting place for social and cultural life. Since its reconstruction in 2003, it has hosted theatre, dance and concert events as part of a regular programme.

Festivals and traditions

The Rosario de la Aurora takes place in El Palmar on Sundays in October. It begins every Sunday in October at 6:30 a.m. at La Purísima parish church. A procession then follows, during which the Ave Maria is sung. The image of the Virgen del Rosario is carried in the procession; masses are also celebrated and the Holy Rosary is recited.

The Fiestas Populares of El Palmar are celebrated in the second half of June. Their programme includes bonfires, a dance festival, dance events, sports competitions, fireworks, theatre performances and concerts, among other activities. Another regular event is the Fiestas Patronales in honour of the Purísima Concepción. They take place from 1 to 8 December; a solemn procession is held on 8 December.

Nature and open spaces

Parque de La Paz is a 17,300-square-metre green space in El Palmar. It contains more than 300 trees, complemented by new shaded areas. The children’s area includes climbing nets, a climbing wall, a slide, balance ropes and a swing for children with reduced mobility. Parque de La Paz also has a multi-purpose sports court where basketball and football can be played.

The wider landscape also includes the Parque Regional El Valle y Carrascoy. It encompasses the Sierra del Puerto and has been under regional protection since 1992. On the Majal Blanco estate in the heart of the Sierra del Puerto, there is a small group of large, centuries-old cork oaks.

Getting around

For cycling, Vía Amable 2 connects Murcia with El Palmar via Aljucer. The route runs along traditional paths through the Huerta de Murcia. El Palmar is also connected to Murcia by TMP Murcia’s urban bus routes T1, 26, 28, 70, 72 and 78.
