Fuente Alamo De Murcia combines a rich water heritage with historic buildings and extensive paths through the cultural landscape. This character is particularly evident along the Vía Verde del Campo de Cartagena: 53.2 kilometres are available for walking and cycling along the unfinished Cartagena–Totana railway line. In addition, there is a historic townscape, churches and chapels, as well as a hydraulic heritage trail through the Rambla de Fuente Álamo de Murcia.

Culture and history

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Agustín, a Baroque church, is a prominent feature of the townscape. The parish church dedicated to San Agustín in Fuente Álamo was built around 1583. This church is also connected with a chapter from more recent history: the survivors of the ship „Castillo de Olite“, which sank in 1939, were held in the Iglesia San Agustín until the end of the Spanish Civil War.

The Ermita de San Roque dates back to the 16th century. It is the oldest chapel in the municipality of Fuente Álamo and is of greatest historical significance to the municipality. Since its restoration in 2001, the Ermita de San Roque has served as a cultural venue for exhibitions. The origins of the town also date back a long way: around 1520, settlers established themselves between the Rambla de La Poza, now called Rambla del Fraile, and the Rambla de La Azohía, and founded Fuente Álamo there.

Water and museums

The Aljibón de Corverica is a hemispherical limestone cistern with a depth of 5 metres and a radius of 6 metres. The structure dates from the 19th century and is described as the largest cistern in the Region of Murcia. Following its restoration in 2001, the Aljibón de Corverica is now home to the Museo del Agua, where an extensive collection displays equipment used to store and transport water.

The Museo de Fuente Álamo opened in April 2007. Together with the Aljibón de Corverica and the historic religious buildings, it is one of the town’s established cultural points of interest, without the individual institutions being limited to the same period or subject.

Landscape

The Rambla de Fuente Álamo collects water from the surrounding sierras and later flows into the Mar Menor. After passing through Fuente Álamo, the Vía Verde del Campo de Cartagena runs through citrus and almond plantations as well as livestock farms. At La Pinilla, it divides into a northwestern section towards Totana and a western section towards Mazarrón, known as the Vía Verde de Mazarrón.

A hiking trail connects Villa Eulalia and Fuente Álamo via rural paths through a cultural landscape characterised by diverse cultivation. On the Cartagena–Fuente Álamo section, the Vía Verde del Campo de Cartagena reaches Fuente Álamo approximately 20.8 kilometres from the starting point.

Water routes and local history

The hydraulic heritage trail in the Rambla de Fuente Álamo de Murcia is divided into 15 points of interest. The trail includes the Ermita de San Roque, which dates from the 16th century. Villa Antonia is the final stop on the hydraulic heritage trail.

Festivals

The Fiestas de San Agustín are Fuente Álamo’s patron saint festivities. Their programme includes sporting, social and cultural activities.
