Sucina: Holiday apartment between golf, culture and nature

Sucina combines religious art, firmly established celebrations, historic mill remains and a landscape with a golf course and protected natural areas. The notable points range from the Nuestra Señora del Rosario parish church and the mills in the Campo de Sucina to the trails of the Sierra de Columbares.

Culture

The town centre of Sucina developed around the Nuestra Señora del Rosario parish church, which was founded in 1744. Its furnishings include the titular image of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, a carving by the master Roque López, a pupil of Salzillo. Thus, the development of the town centre and a precisely attributable work of art are central to the local cultural history. The parish church is associated not only with a single architectural detail, but also with the celebrations that shape the annual calendar in Sucina.

Festivals

The Semana Santa celebrations in Sucina include a Good Friday procession with the Cristo Crucificado, the Dolorosa and San Juan Evangelista. In October, the patron saint celebrations in honour of the Virgen del Rosario take place. A special technical and religious detail can be seen during the patron saint procession: the image of the Virgen del Rosario and its carrying platform automatically descend from the main niche of the high altar. The festival calendar thus combines a fixed date in October with a procession whose course is shaped by this movement of the image and the carrying platform.

History

The historic mills are also part of the townscape and the Campo de Sucina. Molino de Arriba belonged to a historic mill network in which large quantities of flour were produced from the Early Modern period, particularly from the 18th century, until almost the middle of the 20th century. The building stands on private land but is visible from the road from Sucina. Molino de Abajo is a historic windmill remnant with a round structure made of masonry and lime. The grinding elements were moved by wind power; today, no remains of the sails or coverings survive. The two mills therefore point to different visible and preserved aspects of the former processing of grain in the Campo de Sucina.

Nature

Part of the Campos de Sucina is included in the ZEPA de Monte de El Valle y Sierras de Altaona y Escalona because the area meets the criteria of the Birds Directive for the Eurasian eagle-owl. In the wider landscape, the Sierra de Columbares reaches an altitude of 646 metres above sea level. Hiking trails lead to its summit and can be accessed both via the Puerto del Garruchal and via the Collado de los Ginovinos in the Sierra de Altaona. Thus, in addition to the protected area, a named elevation point and two access routes to the summit trails are part of the geographical context of the surrounding area.

Golf

Hacienda Riquelme in Sucina is an 18-hole golf course with a par of 72. The golf course was designed to preserve the natural character of the surroundings; it runs through wild vegetation and olive groves. The sporting facility is therefore also defined by its specific course size, par value and the landscape elements of wild vegetation and olive groves.
