Holiday apartment in Torre-Pacheco: Nature, Mills and Old Town

Torre-Pacheco reveals its special features at specific locations. At Cabezo Gordo, the area is designated as an Área de Protección de la Fauna Silvestre (APFS), meaning a protected area for wild animals. Six habitat types of community interest have been mapped there, covering 90 percent of the protected area; three of them are priority habitat types. The Sima de las Palomas, the Cueva del Agua and the mills of El Pasico bring together nature, archaeology and the history of agriculture.

Nature

The Cueva del Agua in Cabezo Gordo is a former mine with a freshwater lake. The caves of Cabezo Gordo can only be visited as part of tours organised by Torre-Pacheco Town Hall. The Sima de las Palomas is also connected with ongoing archaeological work: the site can be visited during open days held twice a year, in winter and summer, as it is still being investigated. Research at the Sima de las Palomas focuses in particular on Neanderthal remains excavated during earlier excavation campaigns.

Routes and townscape

Today, Calle Mayor and Avenida Fontes form an extensive pedestrian area in Torre-Pacheco. The Ruta Urbana Torre Pacheco offers a different perspective on the town. It allows visitors to discover Torre-Pacheco’s old town, its most distinctive buildings, traditions, notable personalities and anecdotes. The route is designated as an easy walking out-and-back route, with the route types accessible route, route for children and city route.

The guided route La Fábrica del Viento takes visitors into the Molino de El Pasico to learn how its three floors or chambers function. The route thus links its name to a specific building and its internal layout, without reducing the mill to merely an exterior view.

Culture and history

The Paraje de El Pasico includes a windmill designated as a B.I.C. The Fiesta de los Molinos also takes place in the Paraje de El Pasico on the last weekend of April. The Molino de El Pasico is documented as a grain mill in the pedanía of La Hortichuela in 1844.

Most of the preserved architectural remains of the former church of Torre-Pacheco are currently located in the church square.

Another cultural landmark is the Festival de Cante Flamenco de Lo Ferro, which is recognised as a festival of regional tourist interest.

Agriculture and regional topics

The Ruta Verde De la Semilla al Plato follows the entire production process of fruit and vegetables grown in the fields of Torre-Pacheco. It begins at the CIFEA, continues to the Semillero El Jimenado, passes irrigation houses and greenhouses, and showcases seasonal cultivation areas. Along the route, visitors learn about modern and traditional agricultural technologies through explanations from specialists. Agriculture is therefore presented here not only as production in the fields, but also as a sequence of stops, cultivation areas, irrigation and expert guidance.

Printed educational booklets about the routes, explanatory brochures, travel guides and maps have been produced for Torre-Pacheco and its pedanías.
