Holiday apartment in Aledo: Fortress Walls and Nature in Murcia

Aledo combines a distinctive historical ensemble with unusual landscape formations. The historic ensemble of Aledo is designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). Largely preserved, the Muralla de Aledo separates the old town from the rest of the settlement with its well-preserved sections of wall. This combination of fortifications, the town centre and preserved buildings makes it clear how closely the town’s history is connected to its present-day appearance.

Culture

A prominent part of this heritage is the Torre del Homenaje. The medieval building, with its three floors, dates from the late 13th century and now serves as an interpretation centre for the town of Aledo. The terrace of the Torre del Homenaje offers views over Aledo’s town centre and the Valle del Guadalentín; on clear days, the Mediterranean can also be seen.

Aledo’s cultural heritage also includes the Iglesia Santa María la Real. It was built between 1761 and 1803 on the site of a former mosque. Its design is Baroque, while its furnishings also feature Neoclassical elements. The church houses works by Francisco Salzillo, including the Virgen de la Dolorosa and the Virgen de la Aurora from 1775.

La Picota is another of the town’s historical highlights: it is the only surviving medieval monument in the Region of Murcia. The ECOS Festival of Early Music in the Sierra Espuña provides a recurring cultural highlight. Since 2017, it has taken place every summer in Aledo and five other municipalities. Its aims include a high level of musical quality, attracting national and international musicians, enriching the tourism and cultural offering of the Region of Murcia, and enhancing the value of the municipality’s and region’s heritage.

Nature

Next to Aledo’s walled complex lies Las Cuestas, a distinctive area featuring geological peculiarities, fossils and clay walls shaped by erosion. The character of this area therefore results from the interplay of rock, geological formations and the visible traces of erosion.

Another striking landscape formation is the Estrecho de la Arboleja. This is a small canyon carved into limestone by water over thousands of years. Its features include small water outflows, limestone formations along the walls and small lagoons.

Routes

The Ruta de los 10.000 pasos is a circular route along a Via Verde from the Torre de Aledo to the Estrecho. This connects the historic starting point and the canyon-like landscape in a single route.

The Estrecho de la Arboleja can be reached via the C-21 towards Lorca. About two kilometres from Aledo’s town centre, signs indicate the turn-off. There is a recreational area with information boards, barbecue facilities, shaded areas and parking.
