Casas Del Aljibe: Holiday Apartment, Cave Houses and Salt Landscapes

Casas del Aljibe is one of four settlement centers in Las Cañadas. The Venta Aledo archaeological site is located nearby; the finds discovered there suggest the presence of a significant Roman settlement.

Culture and History

The remains excavated at Venta Aledo include opus signinum floors, a burial, stone walls, roof tiles and pottery. Various traces of earlier settlement can therefore be found side by side at this site.

The Aljibe de Casas del Aljibe has a rectangular layout measuring 18 meters in length and 5 meters in width. It gives the caserío its name and is one of the examples with the greatest capacity. The Aljibe de Juan Vivancos is located in Casas del Aljibe.

The Cueva del Cabezo de las Casas del Aljibe is catalogued in Las Cañadas as a cave house. Nature and Landscape

In the vicinity of Casas del Aljibe, La Alcanara comprises salt vegetation, cereal fields, fallow land and areas that are temporarily flooded when there is sufficient rainfall. The area provides a habitat for the cream-coloured courser and the black-bellied sandgrouse.

The landscape of Las Cañadas is shaped by agriculture, particularly the cultivation of citrus fruits and table grapes. The Saladares del Guadalentín are also located near Casas del Aljibe: a saline floodplain covering more than 2,000 hectares, designated as a ZEPA and an LIC.
