Holiday apartment in La Garapacha: Hiking in the Sierra de la Pila

La Garapacha combines a striking mountain landscape with evidence of regional everyday culture. Pico de la Pila is 1,264 metres high and forms the highest point of the Sierra de la Pila. At the same time, the village preserves buildings and traditions that reveal the character of this landscape in different ways.

Culture

Among the village’s notable features are the Lavaderos de La Garapacha. They are catalogued as cultural assets of cultural significance and have ethnographic value as part of Murcian water-architecture heritage and as evidence of traditional ways of life. Two public washhouses have been preserved in La Garapacha; both are supplied by the “La Mina” spring on the slopes of the Sierra de la Pila.

The Ermita de la Virgen del Carmen also features distinctive architectural details. Two columns support the bell tower above the entrance. Inside, the ermita consists of three naves; the two side naves are separated from the central nave by semicircular arches resting on columns.

Nature

From La Garapacha, the Sierra de la Pila can be reached via the place known as Mojón de las Cuatro Caras. The Sierra de la Pila Regional Park is protected as a regional park and as a Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves (ZEPA) and Lugar de Importancia Comunitaria (LIC). There are six habitat types in the Sierra de la Pila. The most common are carrascales, meaning stands of holm oak, and sabinares, meaning juniper stands.

Hiking

The Sendero de La Garapacha y Pico de la Pila trail (PR-MU 126) leads from La Garapacha to Pico de la Pila. It is 5.9 km long one way and is estimated to take 2 hours and 20 minutes.

The Cordel de los Valencianos trail (PR-MU 125) leads from the Iglesia de La Garapacha to the Área Recreativa de Fuente Higuera. The one-way route is 8.8 km long and is estimated to take 2 hours. The Sendero Barranco del Mulo circular trail (PR-MU 123) starts and ends at the Plaza de la Iglesia de La Garapacha, is 19.2 km long and is estimated to take 4 hours and 45 minutes.

The route to Los Cenajos and La Pila begins at the Plaza de la Iglesia de La Garapacha; vehicles can be parked there. The routes described therefore include different distances, trail types and estimated times.

Festivals

La Garapacha’s patron saint’s festival is celebrated in September in honour of the Virgen del Carmen. The festivities include processions and romerías leading to important natural areas in the surrounding area. Gazpachos manchegos are among the dishes served at the communal meals during the patron saint’s celebrations.
