Torrelobatón is located in the Hornija Valley, within the Montes Torozos region. The restored Castle of Torrelobatón houses the Centro de Interpretación de la Guerra de las Comunidades.

History

The Centro de Interpretación de la Guerra de las Comunidades occupies the keep’s three floors and uses information panels to explain the Castilian rebellion. The castle of Torrelobatón as it can be seen today dates from the 15th century, when the town came under the rule of the Enríquez family. In 1521, the Comunero troops led by Juan de Padilla besieged Torrelobatón and its castle for eight days before securing their surrender.

For your own planning, years and names can be viewed as distinct historical reference points.

Architecture

The Iglesia de Santa María contains two relieving arches running lengthwise through the nave, a Gothic Christ figure and an altarpiece from the Berruguete school dating from the late 16th century. The church is a place of worship built in the 16th century and extensively remodelled in the 18th century, with a finely executed Neoclassical portico. The Arco de la Villa is a 15th-century gateway in the former town wall of Torrelobatón.

For your personal focus, the building’s form, furnishings and period of construction can be considered as clearly distinct aspects.

Faith and Tradition

The Ermita del Santo Cristo de las Angustias is a 15th-century chapel associated with an Easter pilgrimage documented since the 17th century. The Casa Natal del Padre Hoyos combines traditional building techniques with elements of sophisticated architecture. It is associated with Bernardo Francisco de Hoyos, who was born in Torrelobatón on 21 August 1711 and is regarded as the first apostle of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Spain.

Religious references and architectural features can be treated as two separate perspectives in your own planning.

Dates and Performances

At the Mercado Comunero on 23 April, the dancers of Torrelobatón perform their lazos and dances. The theatrical performance “Preludio de una Batalla” was staged on 16 and 30 October at 12:00 noon in the castle courtyard of Torrelobatón and deals with the events preceding the Comuneros’ departure for Toro.

The two dates indicate different occasions to consider when planning your trip.
