Discover Peñafiel: Castle, Museums and Ribera de Duero

The Castillo de Peñafiel reaches far back into history: its origins date back to the 10th century, when the area lay on the border between the Christian kingdom and Muslim territory. Its current slender, rectilinear form was consolidated in the 15th century. Visits are guided; tickets are available at the ticket office or online in advance.

Culture and History

The Convento de San Pablo was built in 1324 above the former Alcázar of Alfonso X el Sabio. In 1931, it was classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The Torre del Reloj is the only remaining part of the Romanesque Iglesia de San Esteban, which was founded in 1086. The Iglesia de Santa María preserves Romanesque remains from the late 12th century, which are visible only from inside.

The Plaza del Coso was classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1999. Its irregular layout is enclosed by more than fifty traditional houses with wooden balconies. Group visits to the Plaza del Coso are offered, including an explanation of the square and an audiovisual presentation.

Museums and Collections

At the Casa Museo de la Ribera, actors recreate the life and customs of the inhabitants of Peñafiel at the beginning of the 20th century. The museum also presents domestic and wine-production areas across three floors of a 16th-century house.

The Museo Comarcal de Arte Sacro displays nationally noteworthy processional crosses, as well as numerous pieces made of silver from the 14th to the 17th century. The historic sites and collections offer different approaches: architectural history, religious art and staged everyday history can be given separate emphasis when planning.

Traditions and Visits

The Bajada del Ángel depicts an angel descending from heaven to announce the resurrection of her son, Jesus Christ, to the Virgin Mary. This means that different types of visits can be considered separately when planning the day: guided visit, group tour, museum and staged presentation.

Nature and Wine

The Parque de la Judería is a path along the banks of the Río Duratón, suitable for a walk in nature. Wineries can be visited in Peñafiel and in the surrounding area of the D.O. Ribera de Duero.
