Discover Rueda: Wine, Culture and Trails

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is a Baroque monument and was protected in 2013 as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Monument category. In 2006, Rueda was recognised as a historic-artistic site and as a historic-artistic ensemble of Spain.

Culture

The Casa de la Cultura is housed in the restored chapel of an 18th-century Capuchin monastery and hosts exhibitions as well as theatre and music performances. The Ermita de San José is a simple religious building in the highest part of Rueda and offers views over the town.

Wine and Tradition

Rueda’s character is shaped by the Verdejo grape, a continental climate and gravelly soils. Since 2012, the Fiesta de la Vendimia has held the status of a regional festival of tourist interest and is associated with the second weekend in October. It includes a white wine fair and the ceremony of the famous Pisada de la Uva, the treading of the grapes.

Rueda’s wine tourism offering includes guided tours and hosted tastings at some of the more than 20 local wineries. Wine tourism also includes underground wineries dating from the 15th century as well as modern wineries. The Juan Ruiz chocolate factory adds another traditional touch: it produces drinking chocolate using machines from 1918 and the same recipe as at that time.

Nature

The Puente Zofraga crosses the Río Zapardiel; the medieval bridge dates from 1792 and has three large arches. The Ruta del Vino de Rueda riding route (PRC-VA 34) crosses the Puente Zofraga and can also be used on foot or by bicycle.

The riding, hiking and cycling route of the Ruta del Vino de Rueda (PRC-VA 37) connects Medina del Campo, La Seca and Rueda on a 40-kilometre circular route. The Sendero de Zofraga (PRC-VA 37) invites visitors to hike through the municipality of Rueda to a Roman stone bridge; along the way, it passes vineyards, pine forests and livestock. The Camino de Santiago del Sureste passes through Rueda, coming from Medina del Campo and continuing towards the neighbouring municipality of Tordesillas.

Geographical Location

In the wider area around the Ruta del Vino de Rueda, connections to Madrid are provided mainly via the A-6, while the CL-610 and N-601 lead to Valladolid; there are also train and bus connections to other places in Spain.
