Discover Medina de Ríoseco: Culture on the Canal de Castilla

Medina de Ríoseco is designated as a Historic-Artistic Site. The historic centre of Medina de Ríoseco, with the Rúa Mayor and the surviving gates of the old city walls, is an excellent example of Tierra de Campos architecture; the municipal Oficina de Turismo is located there in the former Franciscan monastery, which now houses the San Francisco Museum.

Culture

Several churches lead through different chapters of art history. The Church of Santa María de Mediavilla is an Isabelline Gothic building constructed between 1490 and 1516. The Church of Santiago contains a Baroque altarpiece by Joaquín de Churriguera. Within the city walls, the Chapel of Benavente has an altarpiece by Juan de Juni dedicated to La Inmaculada.

Holy Week is also part of the town’s cultural profile: its identity, traditions and rites are designated as Intangible Cultural Heritage. In addition, Holy Week in Medina de Ríoseco is recognised as an event of international tourist interest. This means that the focus is not only on individual buildings, but also on inherited forms of communal remembrance.

History

On the outskirts of Medina de Ríoseco, El Moclín was the site of the first major battle on 14 July 1808, marking the beginning of the War of Independence against Napoleon. El Moclín is designated as a heritage site in the category of Historic Site. Its chronological setting makes it a named location in the town’s history, whose significance derives from the specific date and the historical context.

Things to do

The Canal de Castilla offers a different perspective. In Medina de Ríoseco, the canal’s Campos branch ends in a large canal port. The canal port includes a dry dock, warehouses, residential buildings, mills and grain mills. The former San Antonio Grain Mill, dating from the 19th century, has preserved its historic machinery in full.

The San Antonio Grain Mill Museum explains how historic grain mills worked and their connection with the Canal de Castilla. From the canal port of Medina de Ríoseco, a tourist boat departs for regular one-hour trips, which operate from Tuesday to Sunday. The Oficina de Turismo provides information about routes through the historic centre, along the Canal de Castilla and in the Tierra de Campos region. It also organises guided and theatrical tours.

Medina de Ríoseco is a place on the Camino de Santiago de Madrid. The combination of the pilgrimage route, the town’s history, canal structures and religious traditions offers various thematic approaches that you can compare when planning your trip.

Geographical setting

The Ermita de Castilviejo church is located in the vicinity of Medina de Ríoseco. Pilgrimages to it take place every year on 8 September and the following Sunday. Further afield in the region are the Monasterio de la Santa Espina monastery, Castillo Torrelobatón Castle and the Monasterio de Nuestra Señora de Alconada monastery.
