Discover Mojados: Mudéjar, the Cega and Carlos V
Mojados lies on the banks of the Cega River, a tributary of the Duero. The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista is one of the most important examples of regional Mudéjar architecture.
Culture
It was built from the late 13th century and during the 14th century. The Iglesia de Santa María is a Mudéjar building from the 14th century; later alterations were completed in the mid-15th century. It contains an altarpiece and religious artworks, including a Christ by the sculptor Juan de Juni.
The Casa-Palacio Conde de la Patilla on the Plaza de Santa María was built at the end of the 15th century. The Puente Viejo was built in 1575 on the orders of Felipe II and designed by the master builder Juan de Nantes. The Santuario Nuestra Sra. de Luguillas is a Baroque building from the 17th century, known for its bell gable and the frescoes in the Camarín.
The Ermita Santo Cristo del Humilladero is a 17th-century hermitage made of stone and brick; outside, crosses form the Stations of the Cross. The Palacio Viejo del Postigo is a recently restored 15th-century building that formerly formed a unit together with the Casa-Palacio Conde de la Patilla.
The Museo Carlos V is the first museum in Spain dedicated exclusively to Carlos V. Interactive educational offerings provide information about the heritage of Carlos V, his territories, the design of his coat of arms and his ancestors.
Since 2007, the Ayuntamiento de Mojados has organised the historical reenactment and theatrical portrayal of Prince Carlos’s visit to and stay in Mojados in 1517. Mojados is part of the “Itinerario Cultural Europeo de la Ruta del Emperador Carlos V”.
Nature and trails
The municipal pine forest of Albosancho y Cobatilla was established in the Middle Ages. El Chorrero is one of the parks and gardens in the centre of Mojados. de Luguillas lies on the banks of the Cega River and is surrounded by nature.
The PRC-VA 30 Senda del Cega is a 10.5-kilometre circular hiking trail that begins and ends near the Puente Viejo and the Fuente del Caño in Mojados. It runs through the Cega River valley between dryland and irrigated farmland and is flanked by the high plateaus of the limestone uplands. The river landscape of the PRC-VA 30 Senda del Cega comprises a relatively well-preserved river ecosystem of high ecological value, which has been included in the Natura 2000 network.
