Corcos: Monastery, Canal de Castilla and Wine Tradition
On the right bank of the Pisuerga, in a meander between the river and the course of the Canal de Castilla, the Santa María de Palazuelos Monastery extends across the municipal areas of Corcos del Valle and Cabezón de Pisuerga.
Culture
The church of the former Cistercian monastery of Santa María de Palazuelos has been listed as a Historic-Artistic Monument (BIC) since 3 June 1931. Its basilica-style floor plan comprises three naves; the central apse is polygonal, while the two side apses are semicircular. The Cistercian monastery of Santa María de Palazuelos is located in the surroundings of Corcos.
Nature
At Lock No. 40, the connection between Corcos del Valle and the Canal de Castilla is particularly visible; among other things, a grain mill was built beside it as evidence of the economic changes brought about by the canal. At the confluence of the Santa Coloma stream, now called Borbollón, and the Senara, there is a small Roman bridge. El Sotillo in Corcos is designated as a publicly accessible local recreation area for leisure in the rural landscape.
For planning your own trip, architecture, hydraulic engineering and open rural space can be considered as separate focal points. Depending on your personal interests, you can assign different importance to historical forms, connections with waterways or landscape themes.
Wine
The wine landscape includes the Hijos de Crescencia Merino winery and the family’s 15 hectares of vineyards in Corcos del Valle. Hijos de Crescencia Merino is a family winery with a tradition of more than one hundred years. In Corcos there are old wineries dug into the foot of the Páramo, with wine presses and large wooden barrels. As part of the Cigales Wine Route, Corcos is considered a place where wineries can be visited and Clarete wine from Corcos can be tasted.
For trip planning, you can view the local features from three perspectives: historic architecture, water and open rural space, and wine. Which of these perspectives takes priority can be decided independently of the others.
When comparing holiday apartments in Corcos, you can consider the travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions together on the respective listing pages. Comparing these three fields helps structure the specific booking decision, while you can assign different importance to the local features described according to your cultural, landscape-related or wine-related interests.
