Pozal de Gallinas – Lagoons, Pine Forests and Mudéjar Culture

Nature Among Lagoons and Pine Forests

The municipal area of Pozal de Gallinas includes 95.59 hectares of the Natura 2000 site of community importance “Humedales de los Arenales” (ES4180147).

The wetlands of Los Arenales generally consist of shallow, endorheic lagoons with fluctuating water levels. In the Los Arenales area, numerous ponds and lagoons have formed among dunes and hollows; these are known as “lavajos”.

Scattered small pine groves can be found throughout the municipal area; the largest stand extends southeastwards, is crossed by the C-112, and continues into the municipalities of Olmedo and Moraleja de las Panaderas. Posada del Pinar is located on an approximately 130-hectare site in the Tierra de Pinares area, characterised by lush pine forests and gently rolling plains.

For planning your trip, bodies of water, woodland and open plains can be compared as different nature themes. Their extent, landscape form and local names provide different points of comparison.

Culture and Sacred Architecture

Pozal de Gallinas is home to a 17th-century Mudéjar church whose brick construction features decorative arcades. The high altar is an 18th-century neoclassical altar made of marbled stucco; its central niche contains a high-quality 16th-century crucifix attributed to a follower of Juan Balmaceda.

Near Pozal de Gallinas there is an 18th-century sanctuary built in the Neo-Mudéjar style with a single nave. The Fuente del descansadero in Pozal de Gallinas is protected at Level 1 (“integral or monumental”) and is located in Polygon 2, Parcel 9020.

When planning your cultural itinerary, you can distinguish between building structure, furnishings, period and spatial context. The elements mentioned can be arranged as distinct perspectives on the local culture.
