Villanueva de San Mancio visibly carries its history in the Church of Santa María: its stone tower has four levels. La Posada del Canal is a country inn in Villanueva de San Mancio on the Río Sequillo in the province of Valladolid.
Culture
The settlement developed around a Benedictine monastery dedicated to Saint Mancio; the parish church stands on the site of the former monastery. The veneration of Saint Mancio’s relics is associated with Villanueva de San Mancio. The Church of Santa María in Villanueva de San Mancio houses a crucifix from the Palencia school. It dates from between 1560 and 1570 and was created by an artist who was close to Manuel Álvarez. According to local tradition, relics of Saint Mancio are kept in an old chest in the church of Villanueva de San Mancio. During the patron saint festivities, residents traditionally go to the Cristo del Humilladero chapel outside the municipality. The Fiesta de San Mancio is associated with 21 May.
The cultural impressions can be explored in any order. A visit does not have to follow a single focus; individual themes can be considered separately or given different emphasis. Different interests can stand alongside one another without any ranking or shared overall impression being prescribed. Switching between in-depth exploration and brief impressions also remains open as a personal way of experiencing the place.
Landscape and trails
Villanueva de San Mancio lies on the Río Sequillo at its confluence with the Arroyo de Mijares. The walk “Por el Sequillo hasta Villanueva de San Mancio” can be taken upstream along either of the two riverside paths. The Canal de Castilla offers opportunities for canoeing, hiking and cycling tours. Guests of the posada can rent bicycles and take part in guided walks along the towpaths of the Canal de Castilla.
The activity options differ primarily in their form of activity. Walking, hiking, cycling and canoeing are different activities that stand alongside one another without implying any evaluation. Your daily plans can highlight one type of activity or accommodate several interests side by side. No fixed order is prescribed.
Geographical setting
Route 9 offers another way of placing the village geographically: it passes through Villanueva de San Mancio before reaching Belmonte. The village therefore appears not only within the river and canal landscape, but also along the course of this route. Together with the cultural sites and the various paths, this creates different themes that can stand alongside one another when planning your day.
