The Real Monasterio de Santa Clara features one of the outstanding examples of Mudéjar art in Castile and León. The preserved Arab baths are among the best-preserved of their kind.

Culture and History

The Real Monasterio de Santa Clara includes a Gothic church that was added to the Mudéjar palace in the 15th and early 16th centuries. The rooms open to visitors include the Mudéjar Chapel, the Arab Patio, the Golden Chapel, the refectory, the El Vergel Patio, the church and the Capilla de los Saldaña.

The Capilla de los Alderete contains a 16th-century altarpiece with sculptures by Juan de Juni.

The Casas del Tratado are two interconnected palaces that house the Museo del Tratado and where the negotiations for the Treaty of Tordesillas between Castile and Portugal concluded with its signing on 7 June 1494. In two exhibition rooms, the Museo del Tratado explores the historical, geographical, political and social aspects of that period.

The Museo y Centro Didáctico del Encaje de Castilla y León displays lace, embroidery, clothing, liturgical items, ritual cloths and household objects. The museum in Tordesillas also preserves a Cristo Yacente from the school of Gregorio Fernández, an Immaculada by Pedro de Mena, an altarpiece with sculptures by Juan de Juni, and an alabaster tomb created by Gaspar de Tordesillas in 1550.

Since 2001, theatrical tours have taken place in Tordesillas in summer under the name “Historias y Leyendas de la Villa”.

Food and Wine

Bodega Subterránea Muelas offers tours of its underground wine cellar with tastings of traditionally produced wines. In Tordesillas, the dish Gallo Turresilano is prepared according to an old recipe using roosters raised in local courtyards.

The Riberas de Castronuño-Vega del Duero nature reserve includes Tordesillas. The Riberas de Castronuño-Vega del Duero form an important wetland that serves many different waterbirds as a breeding and wintering area.
