La Mudarra: Culture, Landscapes and Holiday Apartments

Baroque architecture, a landscape cultivated over centuries and unusual technical installations give La Mudarra a distinctive character. The Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Rosario is a Baroque stone building constructed in the 18th century. Its design reflects the historic character of the town and provides a clear cultural focal point.

The landscape, too, tells a story of changing uses. Monte de las Liebres is an oak forest that served for centuries as a source of charcoal before the area was used as pastureland. As a result, forest and pasture form part of a landscape in which natural structures and human cultivation are closely intertwined. The “Los pasos comuneros” route begins in La Mudarra. The route, architectural history and landscape represent three distinct thematic focal points.

Culture and Architectural History

La Casa Grande combines a long architectural history with present-day institutional use. The manor house, dating from the 15th century, is now the headquarters of the Fundación Godofredo Garabito y Gregorio. In 2023, it hosted the national journalism event “Conversaciones en La Casa Grande” for the third consecutive time. This brings a historic building and a contemporary event setting together in one place.

An unusual detail can be found next to Fuente Porras: there stands an old dovecote with an unusual floor plan. The Fuente Porras spring appears to be of Roman origin. The spring and dovecote form a small thematic area of their own, directing attention both to the origin of the water and to a distinctive form of architecture.

The houses, too, contribute to the visible character of the town. La Mudarra is characterised by houses made of adobe. The recurring material of the buildings complements the individual historic structures with a feature that can be perceived across many houses in the townscape.

Landscape Between Nature and Technology

In addition to forest, pastureland and the spring, La Mudarra’s landscape also has a distinctly technological side. The towers of the Centro de Investigación de la Baja Atmósfera (CIBA), which studies meteorological conditions, stand in La Mudarra. The facility introduces a scientific dimension into the landscape and differs thematically from the historic buildings and traces of earlier land use.

La Mudarra also features a striking electrical landscape, with cables and towers rising above the high plateaus of the Montes Torozos. Oak forest, former charcoal production, pastureland, meteorological research and visible electricity infrastructure represent different aspects of the landscape and townscape. Those who view landscapes as more than just natural spaces will therefore also find technical forms here as an independent focus of observation.

Events

In La Mudarra, festivals are held in honour of Saint Anthony of Padua, featuring dancing, dulzaina music and traditional games. The festivities add music, movement and community traditions to the town’s quieter themes.
