La Pedraja de Portillo – Lagoons, Nature and Castilian Culture

La Pedraja de Portillo can be explored through clearly distinct nature, culture and festival themes. The Lagunas del Raso consist of two lagoons covering 8 and 2.8 hectares respectively. Each of the two Lagunas del Raso has a central island designed as a resting and refuge area for birds. The Lagunas del Raso offer the opportunity to observe resident bird species as well as species temporarily present during migration.

Nature

The large pine forest areas west of the CN-601, as well as scattered pine areas to the east, are designated in La Pedraja de Portillo as rural areas subject to nature conservation. Culture and History

The parish church of Asunción de Nuestra Señora in La Pedraja de Portillo is a Renaissance building constructed of brick and masonry in the 16th century and remodelled in the 18th century. The Ermita Cristo del Humilladero is a masonry building with a single nave and a wooden ceiling.

The traditional Castilian wine cellars of La Pedraja de Portillo are now used as individual and communal leisure and recreation spaces. The municipality has archaeological sites and other places of cultural and historical significance that are protected for their preservation and scientific study.

Traditions and Dates

The tradition of the Voto de Villa commemorates a promise that La Pedraja de Portillo made on 14 June 1844 after a fire during the San Antonio celebrations. During La Pedraja de Portillo’s patron saint festivities, a bullfighting programme with encierros and the release of young bulls in the square takes place at the end of August.

The areas next to and east of the town centre have traditionally been used by the residents of La Pedraja de Portillo, among other purposes, as areas for walks; they are also the setting for encierros. The municipal swimming pool of La Pedraja de Portillo was open in 2026 from 20 June, opening at 12:30 p.m., until 6 September.
