Castronuño on the Duero: Nature Trails, Cultural Heritage and Traditions

Castronuño can be explored on foot or by bicycle along the 3.4-kilometre Senda de los Almendros circular route. The trail passes through reed beds, riparian woodland, pine groves and dry-farmed fields.

Nature and Trails along the Duero

The Riberas de Castronuño–Vega del Duero were legally designated as a nature reserve. Activities compatible with this protection include educational, cultural and recreational activities. The area combines habitats for waterfowl and riparian woodland with the Embalse de San José reservoir.

Parque de La Muela features a natural viewpoint overlooking the Duero’s large meander within the nature reserve. The park is also a recreational area with swings, benches, tables, litter bins and a drinking-water fountain. Playa Fluvial is used for day trips, picnics and observing wildlife near the Embalse de San José reservoir.

Casa del Parque de las Riberas de Castronuño y Vega del Duero provides visitors with information about the Vega del Duero and a controllable camera for viewing the area.

On the Camino Natural del Duero, Stage 16 from Tordesillas to Castronuño reaches the Riberas de Castronuño–Vega del Duero nature reserve. From the CL-602, it climbs along a path to Castronuño. The subsequent Stage 17 to Toro begins in the upper Bodegas quarter near the Iglesia románica de Santa María del Castillo and the Casa de la Reserva, an interpretation centre.

The beginning of this stage descends from La Muela and includes footbridges, sections of steps and the Mirador del Teso viewpoint above the river. In the area of the small harbour, the stage also reaches an observatory from which birds can be observed unobtrusively.

Senda de los Pescadores has a birdwatching post and a platform over the river. From there, the opposite bank can be viewed; it is home to the heart of the nature reserve. The trail also leads to a recreational area with tables and benches, as well as 60 fishing spots on the right bank of the river.

Senda del Ferrocarril is an 8-kilometre route that can be followed linearly or as a circular route starting from and returning to Plaza de la Constitución. It is considered easy and recommended year-round. It passes through riparian woodland at the mouth of Arroyo del Caño. Nearby are the building housing the irrigation engines of the Canal de Castronuño and the sluice for drawing water from the river.

Culture and History

Iglesia Sta. María del Castillo was built in the first half of the 13th century in an advanced Romanesque style with Gothic influences and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1962. Its main altar houses a 14th-century Rhenish Passion Christ. This wood carving is considered to be one of only three of its kind in Spain.

A traditional local bodega preserves the more than 110-metre-long underground Galería de ataque del siglo XV. It is accessible from Calle Real. The associated tour includes an aperitif and wine, and non-alcoholic drinks for minors.

Festivals and Local Traditions

The Fiestas de San Miguel are considered Castronuño’s main festival and have been celebrated since time immemorial. They include the traditional Bajada del Palillo, a two-hour dancing procession along Calle Real from the town hall to Plaza de la Constitución.

The San Miguel festivities also include a Mercado Medieval held every year since 2007 in Parque de La Muela, with around fifty craft stalls, workshops, regional dances, processions, theatre performances and concerts.

Castronuño’s Carnival includes the public recitation of the Versos de los Quintos on Domingo Gordo, featuring humorous and critical verses, as well as a ribbon race.

As part of the 1º de Mayo tradition, a poplar trunk approximately 25 metres high is raised with ropes around midnight, followed by a communal chocolate treat. On 1 May, a communal meal in Dehesa de Carmona and a Capea with young cattle are also part of the local tradition.

A special culinary feature of Castronuño is the Mollete: a typical sweet, anise-flavoured yeast pastry associated with Semana Santa and eaten throughout the year.
