Valoria La Buena – Culture, Wine and Holiday Apartments

The Zorita-Las Quintanas archaeological zone is considered one of the most significant archaeological complexes from the Iron Age in the province of Valladolid. It is located on the left bank of the Río Pisuerga, in one of the river’s broad meanders.

Culture and History

At the Museo del Cántaro, the water jug takes centre stage. The museum then presents the techniques, history, as well as the romantic and anthropological aspects of pottery. A prior appointment is strictly required to visit the Museo del Cántaro.

The Church of San Pedro Apóstol has a central hexagonal floor plan crowned by a large dome. In Valoria la Buena, it is classified as a cultural asset of special interest and is an example of Neoclassical architecture in the province of Valladolid.

Scattered throughout the municipality are the Chozos of Valoria la Buena: characteristic stone structures that shepherds used for protection from bad weather.

Landscape and Trails

Valoria la Buena has six peaks rising to more than 800 metres, as well as hills, plateaus and valleys. At the confluence of the Arroyo Madrazo and the Río Pisuerga at the Molino de La Galleta, nature, landscape, cultural heritage and history come together in an environment that has existed since the Middle Ages.

Stage 8 of the GR 296 “Senderos del Clarete” connects Dueñas and Valoria la Buena along a 10.5-kilometre route.

Wine and Craftsmanship

Since 1946, Quesos Quevedo has been producing artisan cheese from raw sheep’s milk. A guided tour of the artisan cheese-making process includes a tasting of up to seven different cheeses and a wine from Ribera del Duero.

The Bodegas de Fuenteperal are a group of traditional wine cellars in good condition that are still in use. Concejo Bodegas offers daily visits to its vineyard, including audiovisual information about its history, tastings of various wines and prepared tapas, for groups of two or more people.

Events and Experiences

Puerto Espacial is a space-themed attraction for all ages, featuring aliens, robots, spaceships and characters from across the galaxy.

La Trashumancia is celebrated in November with various activities. The activities recall the importance of this form of pastoral farming in the history of Valoria la Buena and the site’s former role as a stopping place along the Cañada Real Leonesa Oriental.

Nochevieja de Verano takes place on the first weekend of August; on Friday there is a San Silvestre race, and on Sunday a traditional New Year’s concert. In connection with La Martiniega, gastronomic days as well as other entertaining and cultural activities take place on the first weekend of December.
