Santibáñez de Valcorba lies in the valley of the Valcorba stream; dense vegetation is concentrated on the slopes of the plateaus. In this landscape stands the Church of San Juan Evangelista, a stone building from the 13th century in the Gothic-Mudéjar style.

Culture

Inside the church is a polychrome wooden carving of the Virgin dating from the 14th century. A Gothic-Mudéjar portal is preserved in the north wing and is considered evidence of the church’s former connection with the castle.

The main altar is a Renaissance work from the 16th century and is dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist. Its paintings depict the Fathers of the Church, scenes from the life of Saint John the Evangelist and the Assumption of the Virgin; the paintings are attributed to the 17th century.

Archaeological settlement remains from the Copper Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman and Late Roman periods, as well as the Visigothic period, have been documented in the immediate surroundings of Santibáñez de Valcorba and within its territory. The local theatre culture includes the theatre group «Las Bernardas», founded in 2003, which won first prize at the 2008 Muestra Provincial de Teatro for its performance of «Troyanas».

Nature

The holm oak forests of Santibáñez de Valcorba cover a considerable part of the municipality. Holm oak (Quercus ilex ballota) predominates there over Portuguese oak (Quercus faginea). Due to their significant faunal interest, the forests have high landscape and ecological value.

Hiking

The PRC-VA 21 Sendero del Valcorba circular hiking trail starts and ends at the recreational and rest area known as «La Fuente Vieja». It reaches the Llanillo ridge, from where hikers can enjoy a view over the entire Valcorba Valley.

The PRC-VA 20 Sendero de la Sombría is a 7.2-kilometre circular trail with a low difficulty level and a stated walking time of two hours. The PRC-VA 22 Sendero de las Viñas follows a paved path for pedestrians and bicycles to the Arroyo Valcorba and then returns to the Fuente Vieja recreational area.

The information on walking time, trail length and route provides you with different points of comparison for planning your day.

Local Life

The 2023 municipal festival programme included the 36th edition of the non-competitive ascent of Pico Llanillo. At Mesón Los Tres Olmos, lechazo is prepared on spits or rods and grilled over embers.
