Almenara de Adaja: Roman Heritage and Mudéjar Culture

Almenara de Adaja draws attention to the Villa Romana de Almenara-Puras, which preserves the remains of a Roman residence covering more than 2,500 square metres. The Museo de las Villas Romanas and the Villa Romana de Almenara-Puras are located on the N-601 between Valladolid and Adanero at kilometre 137.

Culture

The Museo de las Villas Romanas explains the rural life of the Romans through the characteristic rural buildings known as villas. The Almenara-Puras museum complex consists of two complementary buildings. The archaeological site of the Villa Romana de Almenara-Puras shows a settlement history spanning around 3,000 years, presumably with interruptions. San Blas is the patron saint of Almenara de Adaja. The Roman residential architecture, the museum presentation and the long settlement history represent different cultural focal points. Together with the size of the Roman residence, they create an impression that makes both the structure itself and its historical context visible.

The Almenara-Puras museum complex includes a reconstruction of a Roman house. The guided tour of the Villa Romana de Almenara-Puras includes a large exhibition area with information about the historical context of Roman villas. The Mudéjar Route begins at the Almenara de Adaja-Puras Roman villa. The Almenara de Adaja-Puras museum complex also includes a themed children's park. This makes it possible to view different forms within the cultural offering side by side: the reconstruction of a house, the guided tour with its exhibition area, the starting point of the route and the independent park. History

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción dates from the 13th to the 16th century. It preserves a Mudéjar apse made of brick and stone, above which rises a tower-like bell structure. The interior of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción can be visited after contacting the Almenara de Adaja town hall. At the church, the construction period, materials and structure are therefore clearly distinct. The possibility of visiting the interior complements the view of the externally visible apse and bell structure with an additional, explicitly regulated form of access to the building.

Geographical Setting

Almenara de Adaja is located in a completely flat area with numerous ponds and lavajos. This landscape clearly differs in character from the archaeological sites and the church. The flat topography and the numerous ponds and lavajos form the landscape setting, while the villa, museum, Mudéjar Route and church mark the cultural points of reference in the town.
