Puras: Roman Villa and Local History

At the Museo de las Villas Romanas de Almenara-Puras, you will receive an entertaining and educational introduction to rural life during the Roman era. The tour includes projections, audiovisual content, explanatory panels, reproductions and artefacts from the archaeological site.

The different forms of presentation allow visitors to experience the site not only through preserved structural elements, but also through images, media and replica objects. This means that illustrative and explanatory elements are presented side by side along the same tour.

Culture

The Villa Romana de Almenara-Puras complex includes the excavated remains of a former manor house from the 4th century AD, with its former rooms and courtyards, mosaics and sections of the original wall paintings. The Museo de las Villas Romanas offers activities for schoolchildren. The complex also includes a themed children's playground.

The tour of the Museo de las Villas Romanas is fully accessible. The entrance has a ramp, while the path between the archaeological site building and the replica is paved. Both the main building and the replica have adapted toilets.

Geographical Location

The archaeological site can be reached via the N-601 from Olmedo towards Madrid. About 200 metres after the turn-off for Puras and Almenara de Adaja, the building containing the excavated and secured section of the villa is located on the right-hand side. Puras covers 10 square kilometres and has fewer than 60 inhabitants.

Local History

The tower of the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Puras stands at the foot of the church and dates from the 16th century. La Fuentona in Puras is built of brick and bears the year 1866 on its gable.

Puras has a spring dating from the 19th century, where washerwomen used to gather. The statues of San Roque and San Isidro associated with the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Puras were recovered after they turned up in Lisbon.

Traditions

In the past, Puras held large festivals in honour of San Isidro, the patron saint of farmers, on 15 May, and San Roque on 16 August, featuring traditional games and open-air festivities.
