Olivares de Duero lies on the right bank of the Duero as a riverside town. Its geographical setting also includes a notable crossing: Stage 10 of the Ruta del Duero passes Olivares de Duero and crosses the Duero via the stone bridge to Quintanilla de Onésimo. The Puente Quintanilla de Onésimo y Olivares de Duero is the only bridge over the Duero between Tudela and Peñafiel and is a Renaissance bridge with seven arches. For planning purposes, the river crossing, route and architectural form can be considered separately.
Landscape and Trails
In the natural surroundings of Olivares de Duero, the Ruta de la Ribera is one of the hiking routes. When planning your own day, you can organize the different route names as separate trail themes. A stage route and a hiking trail do not necessarily have to be the same planning focus.
Culture
The Iglesia de San Pelayo contains 51 oil paintings attributed to the Maestro de Olivares. In the centre of Olivares de Duero stands the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Virgen de la Estrella; it safeguards the image of the town’s patron saint. For your cultural planning, you can consider these two religious sites as separate focal points.
Traditions and Cuisine
The main festivities of San Pelayo take place on 26 June. The festival of the Virgen de la Estrella takes place on the Saturday closest to 22 September. During this festival, the image of the patron saint is carried up to the church, brought back down on the feast day, and the carrying poles are auctioned. Still prepared in the traditional manner, the «Plato de la Abuela» consists of lean pork, chorizo, egg and potatoes. The two calendar dates and the dish offer different thematic approaches for your personal travel planning. The fixed date of 26 June thus stands alongside a festival whose date is determined each year by its proximity to 22 September.
By the Water
The Embarcadero Olivares has a picnic area on the GR14. Fishing is one of the possible activities at the Embarcadero Olivares. For organizing your interests, the picnic area and fishing represent different types of focal points side by side.
Orientation
Olivares de Duero has seasonal tourist information. You can consider this seasonal availability as a separate planning aspect alongside trails, culture and water.
