Villanueva de la Condesa – Church, Viewpoint and Tierra de Campos

At the highest point of Villanueva de la Condesa is the Mirador Castillo, also known as Mirador Fortaleza, on the site where a fortress is documented as having stood in the Middle Ages. From there, the view extends across the plains of Tierra de Campos and the riverside landscape of the Cea. On clear days, the peaks of the Picos de Europa and the Palentina Mountains are also visible.

Landscape

Villanueva de la Condesa lies in the Tierra de Campos landscape, with its plains, the riverside landscape of the Río Cea and several streams. The village itself is situated on the slope above the right bank of the Arroyo Carrozancos. The approach to Villanueva de la Condesa is already characterised by scattered wine cellars and is known for its stands of weeping willows. In this way, open plains, waterside margins and the characteristic elements of the approach all come together in the village surroundings.

Observing the sky is also part of the local setting: “Villanueva de la Condesa – Viewpoint” is designated in the province of Valladolid as a place for observing the sky. Panoramic views across Tierra de Campos and views of the night sky therefore stand alongside one another as distinct landscape references.

Culture

The Iglesia de San Pedro is a late Gothic-Mudéjar building from the late 15th century, constructed of brick and stone. Its interior contains sculptures of Santiago and the infant John the Baptist. The building consists of three naves separated by columns, meaning that, alongside the materials and period, its interior layout is also one of the church’s defining features.

On 15 May, the festival of San Isidro is celebrated in Villanueva de la Condesa. Inés Ramírez is part of the village’s history and the history of its lordship: under the rule of Ferdinand IV, she was the feudal lady of the municipality, and her title as countess is associated with the name Villanueva de la Condesa. The original name of the village was “Villa nova de Galindo Núñiz”.

The cultural history of the nearby area includes the Real Monasterio de Santa María de Benavides, which lies in the vicinity of Villanueva de la Condesa. In the wider regional area are also the Villa Romana La Tejada and the Monasterio Real de San Benito.
