Castrodeza: Procession, History and Landscape

Every year on 8 May, Castrodeza holds a procession in honour of its patron saint, San Miguel Arcángel. During the procession, residents carry up to 17 different images of saints on their shoulders. Religious carpets have been made in Castrodeza continuously for more than 30 years in honour of San Miguel Arcángel. For processions, they are created in a workshop with the help of friends and neighbours; afterwards, images of saints are carried over them.

You can align your selection with your preferred priorities: festival culture, sacred sites, historical evidence or the landscape around the Hontanija.

The Iglesia de Santa María is located in the upper part of Castrodeza; the Ermita del Humilladero is near Castrodeza’s parish church. The area popularly known as “Teso de la Iglesia” is associated with the church and a nearby settlement that later became deserted. You can view the different names as distinct cultural and local historical points of reference.

Festivals

The festival in Castrodeza traditionally begins with the “puesta del mayo”: on the Saturday immediately before the main festival, the tallest tree is erected from the banks of the Río Hontanija. A fixed date stands in contrast to a personal weighting of cultural and landscape themes. You can shape the focus of your stay around your own interests instead of assuming a fixed order for the topics.

A historical point of reference is the Molino del Concejo. It still has its complete technical equipment and ceased milling operations in 1972. Castillo Torrelobatón, a castle, is located in the vicinity of Castrodeza. In the wider regional surroundings of Castrodeza are the Palacio de los Alderete, a palace, the Castillo de Fuensaldaña, a castle, and the Museo de la Ciencia, a museum. Also located in the wider regional surroundings are La Rosaleda, a garden, as well as Parque Covaresa, Campo Grande and Scouts de Castilla y León Park, each a park.

For regional selection, different topics can be set side by side: historic buildings, a museum, a garden and parks create a different focus from sacred local history. You can consider these perspectives separately or combine them.

Landscape

Landscape and local history can also be considered as separate perspectives. Travel planning with a focus on culture follows a different internal order from planning that places nature and historical evidence at the centre. The weighting is up to you and can shift between the topics.

The Cueto rises above the valley; pre-Roman and medieval remains have been found on its summit and slopes. The area of Castrodeza extends around the Hontanija and below the edge of the Páramo. In addition to the Hontanija, there are various springs and spring sites in the area of Castrodeza.
