L'Hospitalet de l'Infant: Beaches, Nature and Culture

Platja de l'Arenal is 1,800 metres long and the largest beach in l'Hospitalet de l'Infant. Its northern section has an urban character and is easily accessible from the Passeig Marítim. At Platja del Torn, dune vegetation, Mediterranean scrubland and natural pine forests grow; Posidonia meadows lie in the marine area. Migratory birds and the endangered fish fartet can be found at Platja Punta del Riu.

Paths and Water

The Sender Litoral del Jonquet is a 3,420-metre-long, low-difficulty trail that connects the Blue Flag beaches of Platja de l'Arenal and Platja del Torn. More than half of the route runs through the protected PEIN de la Rojala-Platja del Torn natural area, where Illot del Torn is located. From Platja del Torn, a kayak or paddle-surfing tour to Cova del Llop Marí is particularly recommended.

History and Culture

The Gothic Hospital de l'Hospitalet de l'Infant was officially founded in 1344 by Infant Pere d'Aragó i d'Anjou and is protected as a Cultural Asset of National Interest (BCIN). Poblat Hifrensa was designed in 1969 by the rationalist architect Antoni Bonet Castellana and inaugurated in 1975. A guided walking tour takes place there in summer.

The guided heritage programme includes tours of Hospital del Coll de Balaguer, Molí de l'Oli de Vandellòs and Poblat Hifrensa. The visitor centre of Hospital del Coll de Balaguer is located within the walls of the old hospital-fortress. The guided tour at the visitor centre takes place from 1 July to 19 September 2026 at 7:30 p.m.

Routes, Gastronomy and Events

The “Viatge a l'Infant” offering is a self-guided puzzle trail in l'Hospitalet de l'Infant available year-round. The “Ruta pels búnquers de la Guerra Civil” at Coll de Balaguer leads to preserved fortification remains from the Spanish Civil War, including trenches, machine-gun nests, shelters and powder magazines. The Jornades Gastronòmiques de la Tonyina offer restaurant menus centred on tuna in May and June.

The Fest of the Verge del Carme includes a traditional maritime procession in July. The Trobada de Puntaires takes place in June. The Mercat Medieval is held in September and revives the arts and crafts of the period when the town was founded.

Getting There and Information

The l'Hospitalet de l'Infant railway station is located in the La Porrassa sector at Plaça de l'Estació. The R16 line provides connections to València and Barcelona; connections to long-distance and high-speed services are available via Camp de Tarragona station.
