Discover Riudoms

From the 18th century onwards, Casa Pairal d’Antoni Gaudí initially belonged to Gaudí’s grandparents, then to his father and finally to Antoni Gaudí. Casa Pairal d’Antoni Gaudí, Mas de la Calderera and Casa Gaudí thus represent three different family connections: the grandparents’ property, the birthplace and the metal workshop used by the grandfather and father. The Església Parroquial de Sant Jaume Apòstol adds the traditionally recorded name Pere Blai to these local connections.

Culture

Antoni Gaudí was born at Mas de la Calderera on 25 June 1852; this mas had belonged to Antoni Gaudí’s family since the 18th century. The site therefore connects Gaudí’s birthplace with the family’s connection to Mas de la Calderera.

Casa Gaudí housed a metalworking workshop that was initially used by Gaudí’s paternal grandfather and later by his father. The workshop thus points to the craft activities of two generations before the house became associated with Antoni Gaudí.

The architect Pere Blai was involved in the construction of the Església Parroquial de Sant Jaume Apòstol. Alongside the Gaudí sites, Riudoms’ cultural heritage therefore also includes a church building with a named architect.

Walking routes

The Ruta Gaudí Riudoms includes a signposted walking route to the Riera de Maspujols and Mas de la Calderera. Its route connects the link to Gaudí with Mas de la Calderera and also leads to the Riera de Maspujols.

History

The Cisterna Vella is an underground space with a large water cistern dating from the 18th century. It includes underground galleries excavated during the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939; the cistern served as the central room of an air-raid shelter.

The Cisterna Vella can be visited as part of a guided tour.

Festivals

The Fira de l’Avellana takes place on the second weekend of August. Its Gastrofira once again takes place in the central area of the event, in the courtyard of Escola Beat. The date and venue of the festival provide the culinary part with a clear time and place.

Landscape

The Ruta Cicloturística de l’Oli passes through seven olive-oil-producing towns, including Riudoms. It is a circular route that follows flat paths suitable for cyclists of all kinds.

Along the route, visitors can explore various olive-oil-related facilities, including cooperatives, mills, museums and interpretation centres.

The route passes through olive groves, vegetable-growing areas, hazelnut orchards and carob trees, which are typical of Baix Camp.

Getting there

To continue on to Riudoms, it is recommended to travel to Reus and take a bus from there to Riudoms. Buses run regularly from Reus to Riudoms, approximately once an hour.
