Culture and History

Castell de Canals lies west of Valldoreix. The castle was first documented in 1160. This reference is connected to Bertran de Canals, who swore an oath of allegiance to the Count of Barcelona, Ramon Berenguer IV. The year and the recorded oath place Castell de Canals within the town’s medieval history while also identifying a specific connection to the Count of Barcelona.

The Monmany 35 archaeological site in Valldoreix is a Visigothic necropolis dating from the 7th century. As a result, the documented history of this site reaches significantly further back than the documented reference to Castell de Canals. Diàleg monumental, a large sculpture in Valldoreix, stands on Plaça de l’Estació. It was created by Ariane Patout and René Müller. The square thus connects a public space in present-day Valldoreix with a work whose creators are known by name.

Can Monmany lies at the foot of Puig Madrona. The estate is considered the most significant masia in the entire Valldoreix area. Its present appearance dates from the early 1880s. At that time, the former farmhouse was transformed into a manor house. The current building therefore points to a specific transformation: an agricultural farmhouse was converted into a building with a distinguished character.

The estate’s agricultural use was primarily associated with wine production. The use of pine trees was also part of it. This included collecting pine nuts and bark, which was used in Barcelona’s textile dyeing works. These details show the different products associated with Can Monmany: wine from cultivation, as well as pine nuts and bark from the use of the pine trees.

The Poblat iber del Puigmadrona is also located on Puig Madrona in Valldoreix. It is an Iberian settlement. Puig Madrona is therefore associated both with Can Monmany and with this settlement, with the two sites preserving different historical contexts.

Nature and Trails

Valldoreix is an FGC station designated as an access point to the Collserola Natural Park. A total of twelve downloadable hiking routes are available for the Collserola Natural Park. The routes lead to springs, valleys, paths and beautiful masias. Exploring the network of trails therefore reveals different landscape features and historic architectural forms within the same natural setting.
