Sant Pere de Ribes: Culture, Wine and Trails

In Sant Pere de Ribes, Castell de Ribes has been classified as a Bé Cultural d'Interès Nacional (BCIN) since 1949. Castell de Ribes houses a permanent exhibition that, during guided tours, offers a journey through the municipality's history spanning thousands of years.

Culture and History

On the south side of the Església Vella is the Renaissance portal Portal de les Ànimes; it also features the oldest known coat of arms of the municipality. The Església nova (Església de Sant Pere) was inaugurated on 4 September 1910 and is a Neo-Gothic building. Redós de Sant Josep i Sant Pere was built between 1901 and 1905 by the architect Josep Font i Gumà with the help of a donation from the indiano brothers Josep and Pere Jacas. As an architectural complex, Redós is located in a garden occupying an entire city block in the centre of Ribes, between Doctor Marañón, Josep Pere Jacas, Joan Maragall and Sant Antoni Maria Claret streets.

From 1657 to 1833, Casa del Terme served as a boys' school and a teacher's residence; since 1624, it has housed the record books of the Universitat of the Ribes district. The Ruta dels Americanos runs along Carrer Major, which can serve as the starting point for a tour of Sant Pere de Ribes' indiano heritage.

The date of 25 January is recorded as the annual date of the Festa Major de Sant Pau; its documentation goes back to the 18th century. In the case of the Església nova, the Neo-Gothic architectural style, the inauguration date of 4 September 1910 and the reference to Sant Pere in its name have also been handed down. Casa del Terme thus preserves record books whose documented history goes back to 1624.

Nature and Trails

A large part of the Sant Pere de Ribes area lies within Parc del Garraf. Marked trails lead from the centre of Ribes to the foot of the 358-metre-high Puig Montgròs, the highest peak in the municipality. The Riera de Ribes has eroded the clayey terrain, creating small cavities known as Timbes. The present-day Ermita de Sant Pau, situated among vineyards, dates from the 18th century.

Festivals and Wine

The Festa Major de Sant Pau takes place every year on 25 January and has been documented since the 18th century. The Llotja programme includes tastings and information events about products.
