Llerona – Santa Maria, Chapels, Festivals and Routes

The parish of Santa Maria de Llerona has been documented since as early as the 10th century.

Culture and history

The present-day building of Santa Maria de Llerona is a fortified medieval structure with two rectangular towers dating from the 15th century. Santa Maria de Llerona also preserves an older Romanesque portal and is designated as a Bé Cultural d'Interès Nacional (BCIN).

Sant Iscle de Llerona formerly served as a parish like Santa Maria de Llerona; around 1200, the parish priest moved there to live. Sant Iscle de Llerona is surrounded by fields and lies a short distance from Can Guilla.

The chapel of Santa Digna was altered and rebuilt in the 16th century. The private chapel of Can Santa Digna in Llerona is a Romanesque structure documented since the 12th century.

Outside the grounds of the Can Màrgens farmhouse stands the chapel of Santa Margarida; the year 1827 is engraved on its door. The chapel of Can Riembau in Llerona dates from the 18th century and has a small apse.

The chapel of Mare de Déu del Roser is located on the threshing floor of the Can Rovira de Villar farmhouse; a mass used to be celebrated there weekly.

Local festivals

The Festa Major de Llerona takes place around 11 September. At the end of November, Llerona hosts the Festa de la Mongeta del Ganxet.

Routes

The route to the architectural heritage ends at the chapel of Sant Iscle i Santa Victòria in Llerona and leads to the surviving remains from Roman times in the parish of Llerona.

La ruta verda in the municipality of les Franqueses del Vallès is a 16 km route; the farmhouses of the municipality, as well as churches, the town hall and the Torre de Seva, are marked along it as tourist features with vertical signs. As a closed circular route, La ruta verda can be started in any district of the municipality and completed on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.

The route gradually climbs to Turó de les Mentides; from there, it offers an expansive panorama.
