Discover Moià: Coves del Toll, History and Nature

Moià is home to Coves del Toll, a geological formation that has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Remains of hearths and some flint tools attributed to the Mousterian demonstrate the presence of Neanderthals in the Coves del Toll during the Middle Palaeolithic, between 100,000 and 40,000 years ago, in the Moianès region. Cova del Toll is one of the European caves with particularly rich Quaternary fauna.

Nature and Prehistory

The interior of Coves del Toll can only be visited with a guide; you can reserve in advance or buy admission tickets on the same day, provided places are available in a group. The Parc Prehistòric de les Coves del Toll includes reconstructions of four different Neolithic huts. The “De Moià a les Coves del Toll” route is 6.5 kilometres long and is classified as easy.

The caves therefore combine a geological formation with traces of human settlement from different periods. In addition to the hearth remains and Mousterian flint tools, the rich Quaternary fauna is also part of the special character of Cova del Toll. The Neolithic huts in the Parc Prehistòric complement this archaeological setting with illustrative reconstructions.

Museums and Remembrance

The Casa Museu Rafael Casanova in Moià is a 16th-century house where Rafael Casanova was born around 1660. Today, the house contains an exhibition about the War of the Spanish Succession.

Founded in 1935, the Museu Municipal de Moià is located on Plaça Major in the Casanova family’s ancestral home. This ancestral home is Rafael Casanova’s birthplace. The Museu Arqueològic i Paleontològic de Moià displays archaeological and palaeontological finds from the Toll caves and from dolmens in the Moianès in four themed sections.

Moià thus brings together a historic residence, a municipal museum and an archaeological and palaeontological collection. The Casa Museu preserves the connection with Rafael Casanova and presents the War of the Spanish Succession, while the Museu Municipal is housed in the Casanova family’s ancestral home. Finds from caves and dolmens extend this historical connection with the town to the wider Moianès area.

Routes and Activities

Regional walking and cycling routes highlight Puig Rodó in Moià as a rewarding destination. Puig Rodó can be visited on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.

Club de Golf Montbrú-Moià has a 9-hole course with a par of 32. Its design takes the characteristics of the terrain and landscape into account. The club offers a practice area, a putting green and lessons. You can also hire clubs, trolleys and buggies there.

The Centre hípic El Grèbol makes it possible to explore the landscapes of the Moianès on horseback. At the Centre hípic El Grèbol, you can learn to ride, handle ponies and take show-jumping lessons.

The activities therefore range from the easy-rated 6.5-kilometre route to the golf course and horse-riding facilities. At Puig Rodó, paths are available for walking, cycling or horse riding. Club de Golf Montbrú-Moià combines its 9-hole course with a practice area, putting green, lessons and rental services for clubs, trolleys and buggies.
