Construction of Castell de Sentmenat began around the year 1030; archaeological investigations in 2009 uncovered Roman, Visigothic and Arab remains there, including an Arab barrel vault.

Castell de Sentmenat stands on a rocky spur of the Sierra and offers extensive views over the Vallès plain, the valley towards Castellar and the mountains to the north.

Stabilisation work and the restoration of all façades at Castell de Sentmenat began in 2008; the remaining parts of the building were intended for a plan of use leading to their final restoration.

Culture and History

The Museu-Arxiu de Sentmenat is a primarily ethnographic and anthropological museum in Sentmenat, in the province of Barcelona.

Through agricultural tools, particularly those used in viticulture, as well as objects and documents, it conveys the town’s agricultural and textile-industrial past.

The Museu-Arxiu de Sentmenat also preserves an important digitised photographic archive showing Sentmenat at the beginning of the 20th century and its development.

Sentmenat’s Itinerari modernista follows a route through the most important buildings of the period and presents their most significant features.

The church of Sant Menna was first built in the 10th to 11th century as a continuation of a late Romanesque settlement.

The Església Vella de Sant Menna is catalogued as a Bé Cultural d’Interès Local (BCIL).

Part of an apse dating from the 9th to 10th century was identified in the area of the campanile and beneath the current Rectoria; underground structures are also believed to exist there.

Castellet de Guanta is a defensive structure on the Turó del Corb.

Sentmenat’s local theatre is organised within the Societa Coral Obrera la Glòria Sentmenatenca, which has several active groups.
