Vilalleons brings together a historic town centre and the landscape of the Plans de Vilalleons. At its heart is Santa Maria de Vilalleons: the single-nave church is considered an example of Catalan Romanesque architecture and has a barrel vault, two transverse arches and a semicircular apse. In the Middle Ages, a sagrera developed around the parish church, giving rise to the present-day village. The town’s cultural history and landscape offer two distinct ways to shape your trip.

Romanesque Architecture, the Town Centre and Religious History

Vilalleons’ small town centre consists of the church of Santa Maria and a group of houses dating from the 18th century. The houses are two or three storeys high; inscriptions on their door and window lintels add a striking detail to the façades. Together with the single-nave church, this group of buildings gives the village its historic character. The medieval sagrera reflects the town’s development around its parish church, while the 18th-century houses represent a different period in the townscape.

The history of Santa Maria extends beyond its architecture: since the 14th century, the church has enjoyed a Marian devotion that reaches beyond the parish and has been invoked as a Marian shrine. Its furnishings include Baroque altarpieces from the 17th century, considered unique in the Osona region. Romanesque forms, religious significance and Baroque furnishings thus stand side by side in one building. For visitors interested in history and church art, Santa Maria brings together several clearly distinct historical layers.

Another Chapter in the Building’s History

La Sala de Vilalleons adds a different story to the town’s history. The former manor house was later converted into a farmhouse and is documented as far back as 1231. It is protected as a cultural asset of national interest (BCIN); this protection was established by decree on 22 April 1949. Its register number is R-I-51-5645. The change from manor house to farmhouse makes La Sala a distinct chapter in Vilalleons’ built history.

The Plans de Vilalleons: Protected Area and Landscape

North of the village, cultivated land and woodland form part of the Plans de Vilalleons, while an oak grove lies to the south. The area’s varied landscape is also protected: the Plans are designated as a Special Area of Conservation within the Natura 2000 network.

The Plans de Vilalleons also form an ecological and landscape corridor connecting the Plana de Vic with the mountain ranges of Vilalleons. Protected-area status and the corridor function describe two different aspects of the same place: its designation for conservation and its role in linking landscapes. For trip planning, this natural area offers a different focus from the architectural history of the town centre.

Tradition and Hiking in the Wider Area

The traditional Mongetada marks the start of Vilalleons’ Festa Major; in 2026, it took place on 30 July. If you would like to plan your trip around local festivities, check the latest dates and programme details in advance.

In the wider region, the GR 2 route runs from Bellpuig Castle to the Santuari de Puig-l'agulla. It follows a wooded ridge with holm oaks, oaks and pines, then continues to the neoclassical sanctuary. The route offers a hiking perspective beyond the town’s history. Check trail conditions before setting out.
