Nature

In Tapia De Casariego lies Playa de Penarronda, shared with the Concejo of Castropol and the westernmost beach of the Municipio of Tapia de Casariego. Playa de Penarronda was declared a natural monument in 2002 and is designated in the Natura 2000 network both as a Special Protection Area for birds (ZEPA) and as a Special Area of Conservation (ZEC). Endangered plants grow in its dunes; protected birds can be observed on the islets of Las Pantorgas to the east. Playa Penarronda is located in the vicinity of Tapia de Casariego.

The Ruta Lagos de Silva runs along coastal cliffs and small coves, in the surrounding area of which protected bird species can be observed. The Lagos de Silva mining landscape is a mining area covering more than ten hectares and reaching depths of over 20 metres.

Playa de Represas is located in the immediate vicinity of Tapia de Casariego, as is Playa de Tapia. Playa Permenande is located in the vicinity of Tapia de Casariego.

Activities

The Kartódromo de Tapia is a sports facility for recreational and competitive karting. The track is 1,200 metres long and can be used in up to five configurations.

A stage of the Camino de Santiago del Norte runs through Asturias and passes through Tapia de Casariego. The municipal pilgrims’ hostel of Tapia de Casariego is located in Represas on Calle San Martín.

The AS-116 Tapia–Playa de Arnao route is a 10.3-kilometre crossing with a stated duration of 3 hours and 15 minutes.

The Festival Intercéltico d’Occidente has been held every August in Tapia de Casariego since 1997. In 2013, it was recognised as an event of regional tourist interest. The Open Internacional de Tapia de Casariego “Memorial Peter Gulley” takes place during Semana Santa.

Culture

The Faro de Tapia has been in operation since 1 September 1859 and is the only lighthouse in Asturias located on an island. It is one of the nine Asturian lighthouses included in the Spanish catalogue of lighthouses of cultural and historical interest. The lighthouse stands on an island that can be reached on foot from the harbour via a breakwater approximately 100 metres long.

The Puerta Histórica de Tapia de Casariego is one of the main entrances to the Parque Histórico del Navia and houses a thematic museum. The Museo Los Señores de las Casas Palacio is currently closed due to upcoming renovation work; after reopening, guided tours are scheduled to take place from Monday to Friday by prior appointment.

History

The Mirador de Os Cañóis is located on a former defensive fort. It was built in 1780 with the authorisation of Charles III to defend against pirate attacks. The views from the mirador extend over the Asturian and Galician coasts.

The historic Capilla de San Sebastián dates from the 17th century. The Palacio o Torre de Lindoy was also built in the 17th century and is a significant example of Asturian landed-gentry architecture.

The port of Tapia was the first port where maize originating from America was brought ashore. The construction of the new port in the 19th century promoted the development of the local canning industry. The Casa del Reguero, now the Casa de Cultura, is considered the oldest building in Tapia and dates from 1613.

The Palacio de Trenor is located in the vicinity of Tapia de Casariego. Also located nearby are the Museo Cofradia de pescadores, the Castelo d'Arroxo and the Palacio Marques de Santa Cruz.
