Castellote: Templar Castle, Geological History and Mountains

The old town of Castellote is designated a “Bien de Interés Cultural”, while the remains of its Templar castle dominate the town centre.

Culture and History

The castle was built by order of Alfonso II over a fortress that Alfonso I had recaptured from the Muslims. The fortress has an irregular layout and comprises four terraced defensive areas. The Templar castle can be reached via a footpath that begins at the Church of San Miguel.

Nature and Trails

Bosque Pétreo is arranged around the giant fossilised tree trunks at the “El Barranquillo” site. Covering an area of approximately 520 m², it provides explanations about the development of the Earth and plant species. Bosque Pétreo also includes a Carboniferous forest.

The Vía Ferrata Castellote begins at the Plaza and leads past the blue house on the left along the Cuesta de San Miguel towards the church and castle. The sign for the Via Ferrata is located on the path leading up to the castle, where you can gear up.
