El Vallecillo – Ojos del Cabriel, Trails and History

Nature

The Cabriel Valley is designated as a biosphere reserve. The Ojos del Cabriel in El Vallecillo are the source of the Cabriel River. The GR 10.1 reaches the Ojos del Cabriel after 1.4 km; there is a powerful spring there that feeds the river and increases its flow. The waterfall at Molino de San Pedro has a drop of 5 or 6 meters. The cascade next to the Ojos del Cabriel lies beside the ruins of an old forge from the 16th century.

Hiking

The GR 10.1 leaves El Vallecillo in an easterly direction, initially follows the road for about 100 meters and then turns onto a trail. A local hiking trail to Cueva de la Obriga begins in El Vallecillo, heads toward the Ojos del Cabriel, reaches the viewpoint above the Ojos and descends to the springs. The SL-TE 14 hiking trail crosses the Barranco del Pilancón at several points via metal footbridges. The entrance to Cueva de la Obriga lies next to the trail; the cave is considered one of the most important caves in the province of Teruel.

Culture

The built heritage includes Torre Cavero, an old defensive tower probably dating from the 13th century. Today’s Iglesia de la Santísima Trinidad had already been built by 1781. It is a single-nave building with barrel vaults and lunettes. The Ermita de San Pedro is a small temple with a wooden roof and has been documented since 1564. In Cueva Lóbrega, remains attest to an ancient human presence in the area of El Vallecillo; today, the cave is known as Ubriga.

History

Molino de San Pedro initially housed a grain mill and a sawmill owned by the Cavero family. The waterfall there was formerly used to power the millstone beside it. A forge was established at the San Pedro site in 1526. The historic forge of Val de San Pedro in El Vallecillo set up businesses and inns to provide for the workers. The San Pedro sawmill exported processed wood products such as chairs and cut timber to the “Empire” of that time.
