Discover Singra: History and Views in the Jiloca Valley

Singra tells its story through more than a single building: an Iberian necropolis dating from around the 3rd century BC was discovered within the municipality, while La Retuerta, a Bronze Age settlement site, is among the oldest known traces of settlement in Singra. The first written mention of the town dates from 1124, when Alfonso I of Aragón granted Singra to the Monastery of San Juan de la Peña.

Culture and History

As part of the town's historical panorama, the Castillo de Singra represents its medieval military history: it served Alfonso I as a defensive fortress while he controlled the Jiloca Valley and reconquered southern Aragón. The original Castillo de Singra was destroyed during the Carlist Wars; only the church tower remains. The lower layers of Singra's former medieval castle date from the Iberian period and may conceal the remains of an older Iberian settlement.

Singra's ethnological heritage includes traditional masonry houses. Numerous dovecotes shape the townscape, standing as towers scattered across the ridgelines. The Mirador de Singra is located at a geodetic survey point on the hill visible from the A-23 near Singra. From there, the views extend far across the Jiloca Corridor, especially on clear days.

In the area around Singra, a network of trenches connects the upper section of the Trincheras Cabezo Pequeño with three concrete structures. The stop at Singra on the Ruta de la Guerra Civil is just over 2 km from the town and includes three fortified machine-gun emplacements surrounding an underground shelter with two entrances.
