Torre Del Compte: Architectural Heritage, Pilgrimage and Landscape

At the Portal de les Creus in Torre Del Compte stands the only surviving gate of the six gates that once formed part of the former town wall; from here, panoramic views extend over the village and the surrounding landscape.

History and Architectural Heritage

The origins of Torre Del Compte date back to the Middle Ages, around 1210 or 1220. At that time, a small hamlet developed beside an old fortified tower.

Torre Del Compte Town Hall was completed in 1574; an Ethnological Centre can be visited on the upper floor.

The original structure of the parish church of San Pedro Mártir dates from the 14th century. During the Baroque extension and remodelling in the 18th century, two side aisles, the sacristy and an elevated choir were added. The church features rich Gothic sculptural decoration on its keystones and capitals, with floral, heraldic, animal and religious motifs.

Casa Ferrer, also known as Casa del Conde, is an example of 17th-century civil Renaissance architecture and was built from ashlar stone. On the ground floor, it has two robust wrought-iron grilles crowned with zoomorphic figures. Casa Bergós is a Renaissance manor house in Torre Del Compte with four storeys.

Casa Ferrer and Casa Bergós add two Renaissance buildings with different features to the historic townscape. In Casa Ferrer, the focus is on the ashlar stone, ground floor and grilles crowned with zoomorphic figures. Casa Bergós is a Renaissance manor house with four storeys. This makes it possible to consider the materials, façade details and building size separately.

The Ermita de San Juan is a Gothic-Renaissance building lined with centuries-old cypress trees. The Ermita de San Juan is a place where part of Torre Del Compte’s community life takes place, particularly during the traditional pilgrimage in honour of Saint John. The pilgrimage in honour of Saint John takes place on the Saturday closest to 24 June.

Routes and Landscape

When planning your own trip, you can assign separate priorities to cultural and landscape highlights.

The Lo Llaurador MTB route starts in Torre Del Compte at Avenida Doctor Leopoldo Montserrat 22. It passes through olive groves, almond groves and vineyards, as well as fertile riverside land along the Matarraña River.

The PR-TE-169 route begins in a pine forest with cultivated terraces; its signpost at the starting point is located approximately 1 km from Torre Del Compte on the TE-V-3001 road.

The two routes therefore combine different landscapes and starting points: Lo Llaurador connects the named address in the town with olive, almond and wine cultivation, as well as the riverside land along the Matarraña. PR-TE-169 focuses on the pine forest and cultivated terraces at the approximately indicated starting point on the TE-V-3001. These differences can be taken into account when organising your own daily itinerary.
